I plan on staying at the Best Western in Lahaina. Anyone stayed there recently? If so, how is it?
I havent ever really stayed at BW's before, are there coupons or upgrade certs for these hotels?

For Best Western, it's best to always check TripAdvisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com) before committing to a hotel. because of the inconsistency in quality in this chain (which is a looser collection of affiliates than most other hotel chains). In case you've never used that site before, the general rule is to throw out the very best review or two (in case it's written by the owner or their friend) and the very worst review or two (in case it's written by the competition), and look at the balance of the remaining reviews.
There are so many BWs, and so few FTers who stay at lots of them, that you rarely find enough info on specific BW properties on FT alone.

I was looking at the BW(s)-Maui last year myself .. a trusted local pal confirmed that, sadly, the 'not so good' remarks at TripAdvisor were spot-on, and suggested any number of better properties.
We ended up on Ka'anapali Beach (http://www.kbhmaui.com), for an entirely reasonable price.
While exploring the island, we did a drive-by of the Pioneer-Lahaina .. & saw nothing that would have persuaded me to even park the car and look inside. ;)

I do remember passing by it and thinking it stuck out. It didn't look too tropical or hawaiian. We opted for a condo. Great way to keep costs low by cooking one or two meals a day at home, especially if traveling with kids (we had 4 with us).

The Pioneer Inn - Best Western - is the most historic lodging on Maui, built in 1901. It has a small, shallow pool and has of course been maintained to meet the criteria of Best Western affiliation. It is adjacent to the harbor, in the middle of town. The birds start chirping early in the State's biggest Banyan Tree, right next to it! If one is planning on lots of boat dives and snorkel tours and whale watches and ferry trips to Lana'i and Molokai, or wants a place where a car is unnecessary, the P.I. would be a perfect place to operate out of. Think of it as a motel in the middle of the central business district. There's better; there's worse; it is what is is, and has a purpose. It's not a resort. It is right in the center of Lahaina Town. There is a beach about 100 yards walk, just down past the breakwater. You can walk to every shop, gallery, restaurant and theater in Lahaina from the Pioneer Inn. That's the Pioneer Inn. More questions? Just post!
Hope this helps!
A hui hou.

That's it. I remember looking at it and thinking it belonged in Arizona or Nevada.

I have stayed there twice now. It is very modest with very small rooms. Dont stay there if you are looking for a resort. If you want a small clean room then its OK. Decent beach right on site. You are there to sleep, not hang out at hotel. If you are in Hawaii and worry too much about the hotel, then you are in Hawaii for the wrong reason. We used it just sleep twice and would go back again. If you are the resort-type then stay somewhere else but this place is a "cheap" alternative to the expensive resorts. Enjoy!

I second the above comments. If you are looking for a hotel as a destination then this is not the place for you. If you want to enjoy Maui and are looking for an efficient, clean place in the center of all the action there in Lahaina then this is the place.
The rooms are a bit small and the 2 suites ( if I remember correctly ) face the interior courtyard. We stayed at one of the street-facing rooms. The balcony was overlooking the street and was overall a nice experience.

Those rooms facing the street at the Pioneer Inn are the most coveted of all the rooms available in Lahaina for watching the festivities on Halloween, and are reserved years in advance for that date!!!!!

A friend of mine stayed at the Pioneer Inn a couple of years ago and said it was nice, in a rustic sort of way.
He liked the central location.
Another economical alternative in Hawaii might be a Choice Hotel.
I thought someone posted something about them taking over the Outrigger properties.
Not sure what islands they are on or if this turnover actually occurred.

My BAD! My other post was for the BW in Kihei, Maui. Not the Pioneer Inn. Sorry I did not read more carefully. Anyway, my opinion on the BW in Kihei still stands....

We use the P.I. as a meet up place prior to whale watching: just did this day-before-yesterday, as a matter of fact; and post-whale watching pupus: nice bar; good, fun, open-air dining room.
