So I ended up flying on BetaBlue this week. Of course, it was a transcon redeye, and I had just spent 5 hours on another airline flying home from Hawaii, so while I was initially excited, it hit me:
1. I was totally unmotivated to play with the wi-fi. I was not sleepy, but didn't really want to deal with my laptop or a barely charged blackberry at that hour.
2. Even if I sent an e-mail from 36000 feet, at that hour, none of my east coast friends or family would likely be awake to respond or read it.
So I didn't use the service. I watched the passenger seated next to me play with it though on her iBook. It didn't seem to be working for her, and she gave up and went to sleep.
Nothing else on this plane seemed to be functioning smoothly, either. The televisions had to be reset no fewer than two times. My buttons switching between the TV and the XM radio were not really working well. I noticed that they did respond better if I jiggled my armrest, so maybe the wiring was already shot.
Even stranger, the FAs had to reset the reading lights (never had that one before). Mine wouldn't turn on. The guy in front of me had the opposite problem, he couldn't turn his off. It was eventually fixed about 45 minutes into the flight.
All-in-all, I found it somewhat funny that the aircraft designed with the most high-tech feature, wasn't functioning well as a standard issue A320.
