View Full Version : How to add photos to reports?

Hi, am planning to write a review of a series of flights next week on 3 different airlines, Air NZ, Virgin Atlantic, Oasis Hong Kong. Anyway, I want to add photos into the posts as some other reviewers have done.

How exactly do I do this? I have not been able to find this in the faq, and do i need to manage the flie size of photos my self or is this done automatically?

Also, is the "protocol" if there is such a thing, to have a different post for each segment or is it better to just put all flights into one post?

thanks!

How to imbed your photos depends on the host site you are using. There is a great sticky with helpful info. in the travel photography forum (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=629).

I don't know that there is an official "protocol", but one long post can be hard to read. So my preference, especially if you are including photos would be to break up the report. At the same time, I wouldn't want to see a 100 post trip report. ;)

You need to size them yourself. They can be added using [ img ] and [ /img ] tags (without the spaces).

If you have lots of pics embedded then it is helpful to mention that in the title so those who have slow connections can avoid your thread. Otherwise use a photo hosting service and just put the link in your report.

One of the icons on the toolbar is for "insert photo". You can link to whatever site your photo is stored on using that tool. The photos on my recent Rome trip report (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=787242) are linked to my smugmug site, for instance. I'm able to select the photo size as part of the link (small, med, large, original).

Would be nice is we had a test area here on FT so folks could play with these features.

Here, for instance, is a photo with the small setting, then medium, and then large, all set from smugmug.

Sefty added this thumbnail tip in this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9240738&postcount=7) Not sure if it works with all image hosting sites

I suggest centred image "Thumbnails" < 10Kb, with embedded links to larger versions.
Syntax:
"<image thumbnail URL>[/IMG]<new line>
<Image Title/Desc> (<image url>"
e.g.

I've been using this method to try things: "Reply" to a thread, click "Preview Post" and click away from the thread without choosing "Submit Reply".

Ive been doing that as well, in preparation for an upcoming trip report. I noticed that this site has a photo gallery which doesnt seem well used, so i will set up an album in that location.

Can you make it so that images appear in posts instead of just having useless links? (us guys over at A.net dont seem to have a problem)

cmon people, we need to keep with the times!

it is too hard to read a trip report when i have to open each link just to view one lousy picture...

They do, on some reports.

It's up to the poster, whether they link or embed.

From now on,

all posters must use embedded images.

You have the option to show or hide various elements of messages, which may be of use to users on slow internet connections, or who want to remove extraneous clutter from posts.

My preference is no images, unless I am reading a TR by Seat 2A (http://flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3931081&postcount=8) Its all your choice

Thanks,

And why should I have to take extra time to add images in a thread when I've already uploaded them to my photo site & simply clicking on the link will take you to the image? Goes both ways...

Cheers.

When I open a picture to print on a Trip report all I get is an Image number. I don't thin kit's enough to get it to work. On Airliners.net I get the complete address which is very long and it works there fine.

Thank You! ^:D

I'm now able to read all the great TR's that people post without have to go into a clicking frenzy to look at the photos.....

... but then images are not shown when you use the print feature of trip reports. If you like to print a trip report, the images are only shown as link (while I see them in the report as images).

How to imbed your photos depends on the host site you are using.

Does this mean that there's no way just to put them into FT? I don't use a host site.

Coincidentally, sbm12 detailed just yesterday how to use the Flyertalk Gallery here (http://flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=10804230&postcount=38).

On a side note, which photo site is good to post photos ? I saw many flyertalkers use flickr and photobucket. And one person mention photobucket can even resize your photo. Which one is better ? Or any other suggestions ?

ORDnHKG, you might want to see the Good Photo Hosting Sites on the Web? (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=784308)" thread in the Travel Photography forum.

Sorry, I am just picking up really slow.

I saw the insert image icon on here just makes you type in the URL, which means for those have a photo hosting site.

I think the easiest thing is like other sites for you to make your own profile, there is somewhere for you to upload your photo from your computer/USB, when you click upload, then it can go to search a file in your computer, you click what you want, and upload. Is there anyway to do this ?

Ah... you want FT to "host" your image? That is not possible "in-thread", but there are a few places on FT that you can host an image.

On your profile page, you can upload an image for your avatar and another for your profile. Click "My FlyerTalk", then on the left side, "Edit Profile Picture" or "Edit Avatar". If you are a premium subscriber (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/claim_subscription.php), you can upload additional images in your Albums.

You can also use the FT gallery (see sbm12's post here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/10804230-post38.html)).

The URL for an Album or Gallery image can then be posted in a thread to show the picture.

Oh ok, thanks.

So another question is the FT gallery better or using a photo hosting site ? I want to have photos inside my thread rather than a link.

Right now I just signed up for photobucket, it seems like it is quite slow to upload a photo. With so many photo I have, I think it will take more than a hour to do that, is that normal ?

Hi,

I just tried to put up a TR, but I was not allowed to because there were more than 10 images in the TR? Is this new?

How are we suppose to write a TR with pictures with such limitations?

Any clue on this?

Thanks.

Hi
I am considering writing a TR with quite a number of good shots. Is it true that there's a limit of 10 images per TR as mentionned above?

HIDDY
Jul 23, 09, 2:03 pm
It's twenty images.

Remember though that smileys count as one as well. Just post more than one post on your thread if you have too many.

It's actually 20 per POST. If you have 10 posts you can have up to 200 images.

Please just keep them below 50Kb for those who maybe need to use dial-up.

I tried to place smaller photos, but the detail is not so good. Then, when I place bigger photos, it pushes the text out of the field. In order to read the text in these big photos, one has to use the bottom scroll bar to read, which is very annoying.

What is the optimal size to put the photo in the screen, not so big that the text is outside the field, yet not so small that the details are lost?

I believe 800 pixels wide is the recommended max size to keep the FT format from scrolling.
