Can I use AA miles to upgrade on Alaska?
Sorry, but no. Only AS miles can be used from "Value" or higher fares.
There are paid day of departure upgrades occasionally available. Here's more information on AS UG's (http://www.alaskaair.com/as/mileageplan/First-Class-Upgrades.asp).

Just as you can't use AS miles to upgrade on AA, you can't use AA miles to upgrade on AS. You can use your AA miles to purchase a first class award ticket on AS.

Alaska will, however, match your Platinum status to MVP Gold which will give you access to free upgrades. They will only match once, so choose your timing wisely. You're welcome. All I ask is that you do not compete with me for the last F seat.

In order to take advantage of these AS MVPG benefits, however, you'll need to enter your AS number, therefore earning miles on AS instead of on AA. (IIRC, there may be a way for a phone agent to put the AS number in your record as a status number and separately put your AA number in your record for mileage credit, but you probably wouldn't get the MVPG 100% bonus and you'd certainly not qualify for AS MVPG the following year...)

This has been discussed before. You must use your AS number to gain access to elite benefits, like upgrades. If you use your AA (or DL, or CO or NW number) to earn miles, you lose your upgrade or potential upgrade. You can't have it both ways.
