My new DASH came with a nice case which has a magnetic closure.
I thought magnets were the bane of computers?

Magnets are bad for magnetic storage (floppy discs and magnetic hard drives). Magnets are also bad for CRT displays.

Newer devices use LCD screens and flash-based storage, neither of which are adversely affected by magnets.

A colleague was showing me his new Blackberry recently; the holster had a small magnet in it that would disable the keypad.

Blackberry's have had that feature for many years. It used to be the only benefit to keeping the obnoxious holster it came with.

Still is the only benefit of keeping the holster. It also turns off the screen, saving battery life.

There are better BlackBerry holsters--I got mine from Seidio (http://www.seidioonline.com). They include magnets as well to disable the keypad/screen while it's holstered.
