Planning to fly to PHX from the UK for a 10 day vacation next month. Hiring a standard SUV is going to cost £460 incl all taxes and LDW. Same vehicle out of TUS will cost £233. My work around is to rent smallest compact from PHX for 1 day, drive down to TUS, and rent SUV from for remaining 9 days, returning it to PHX. Partner is worried that Hertz may not like me dropping off the compact and picking up the SUV immediately afterwards. I don't think Hertz will give it a thought as long as they get some of our dollars but she seems to have been bitten by some kind of conscience bug

As we initially planned to fly into IAH and to fly to PHX next day I could alternatively change destination from IAH - PHX, to IAH - TUS, pick up SUV there and drive on up to PHX.

Advice appreciated

FYI same vehicle out of LAX comes out at £186!

Try renting from either Alamo or Dollar.. either one allows one-way rentals without additional charge, then you can get that nice SUV, then go back to either Alamo or Dollar and drive back. I know either one do not impose one-way charges. At least 4 years ago, one didn't.

Hi,

if you live in the UK you can do this much smarter by booking through one of the specialised brokers, like USRentACar or Airline-Network.
For example, I just looked up the price of a Jeep Grand Cherokee (4wd) picked up at PHX for ten days (March 10-20, 2008), via Airline-Network.

The price will be 242 British Pounds, and this price includes LDW/CDW, UMP plus of course supplementary liability insurance (1 million USD). But you will have to accept a car from Dollar instead of Hertz.

If you are unfamiliar with brokers like the two I mentioned above then don't worry too much. They get you a better price, but you ultimately get the car from a known company (like Dollar, Alamo etc) and with ALL necessary insurances.
