Seeing the recent discussions here with elite status, I thought I'd bring up a discussion about the elusive elite membership.

Has anybody actually scored a room upgrade in recent memory?

I realize that there are few properties in the states that qualify. I stay mostly overseas with about 30 nights in the last two years. I've never received an upgrade. Even at hotels with suites or business rooms. The standard reply is that I did not book that room and it would be a higher tariff, or they just simply have no clue about what it means to be a Platinum or Diamond.

Any thoughts?

In the US, no. In Europe, yes, for instance back in September when I was staying at a Best Western in Dublin (Sheldon Park Hotel) at the lowest rate and got upgraded to a very nice suite with jacuzzi and everything

OTOH I worked up to elite early in 2007 just for this, and yet on stays last June in Luzern and Zurich I got no upgrades. (Those were the only European BWs I stayed at last year. And not likely to stay at any this year.)

Doesn't look very promising. I have upcoming stays in Nice and Stockholm but not holding my breath.

I've gotten several upgrades here in the US. I'd have had an upgrade to a jacuzzi suite during my last stay, but the system wouldn't let her put me into that room because I had booked using a AAA rate and there were no AAA rates available for that room. Apparently, having a AAA rate locks you into a certain rate class, and you can only be booked into rooms offering that rate class.

That's interesting, I have the AAA account and usually book that rate so that may explain at least here in the US. Thanks

About two years ago, I was accidentally upgraded to the highest level status. An Irish hotel had heavy fingers and gave me 55 nights for a 2 night stay.

With my status, I got a travel card folio, a suit bag cover, and never an upgrade in a room, either in Europe or the US. Bummer.
