Decided to drive down with a friend for a quick long weekend to NYC from YTO. Instead of renting my normal C class (I have been getting disappointing upgrades as of late) I booked an F class.

My friend bailed, but I did not: I get to T1 at YYZ to find an upgrade in slot 22, a black 2008 Lincoln MKZ AWD (http://ford.ca/main/default.asp?model=MKZ&section=2&sVehCategory=Lincoln&language=en&session=%7BCE8E4A5D-A2A0-42D7-8CD1-B9C4E804D26E%7D&source=FC&prospectId=).

Class: I4 with Neverlost and Sirius

The Basics: No options on this car other than AWD. Lists for $41,500 on ford.ca.

Power: Not bad once it warms up. If you don't punch it, it feels weak, but if you give it more than a cm of pedal, it wakes up! 3.5 L V6 (263hp) makes ramp merges easy, even on FDR drive in New York City!

Ride / Handling: Pretty good. I am writing this after coming back basically non-stop from NYC, and my back is fine. The seats are heated and cooled. The ride is firmer than Lincoln's of old (that is a good thing) but felt fine on potholed interstates and New York City cross streets.

Unlike many other domestic cars, steering is tight and linear. In NYC's tight expressways I felt comfortable keeping up with traffic, and on 5th Ave going uptown I could weave around cabs, cars, and cyclists with aplomb.

This is a small-ish car (M-B C Class), so is not a boat like the sedan that often takes me to the airport.

Interior: Nicely appointed with comfortable leather seats (heated and cooled) automatic climate control (that worked), good headroom. The fit and finish was generally good, though the buttons on the dash were slightly all out of alignment (the things you notice on a long road trip alone!)

Features: Had the Microsoft Link Bluetooth phone / audio voice activated radio system. Syncing my phone was easy enough, but it would not work with my iPod (!). It has a USB port for audio -- maybe it works with a Zune....

The voice activation worked, but was rather odd to use at time. No real reasoning between what you needed to do by voice or by pushing buttons. Not as slick in operation as others.

Nice to have Sirius integrated as well.

Value: 69$ for three days all in -- hard to complain! I would get one again...

The Good: Nice ride for long distances. Good power and steering, with comfortable seats and a nice stereo. Ability to use bluetooth for phone integration was nice driving through NY State.

Surprisingly good looking from the front 3/4

The Bad: Hard to express to others that I am not an old man by driving a Lincoln; no iPod integration.

Final Word: Don't worry about the name -- this is not your grandfathers Lincoln!
