While Wall Street speculates about what a merger between Continental Airlines and United Airlines would mean for stock prices, balance sheets and cost structures, the carriers' best customers have more immediate concerns.
"I wonder what would happen to my frequent-flier miles," Julia Martin said as she checked in for a recent Continental flight back to San Francisco. "I count on those miles. It would feel like a real loss to lose them."

Julia Martin - I hope that's her only problem in life. No one even knows yet if UA/CO will even merge, let alone how long it will take. She'll probably fly another five years before any impact even takes effect. What a worry-wart.

Continental should join Star alliance and then kick US Air out.
Or better yet, let jetBlue join *A and kick US Air out. Unitedhansa owns a good share of jetBlue anyway.

When's the last time any US airline's FF mile holders lost miles in a transaction? AFAIK, all miles transferred over to the acquiring airline. Ansett is the only case I know of where miles were lost, although I'm sure there are more.
And those were bankruptcy/liquidations. A merger? Heck, I'm praying USAir gets taken over so my miles are worth something again.
