Now that SPG has announced it is throwing out good customers like me, we need a new section where one can easily find hotels that will permit us vermin.
I have spent hours researching hotel chains, and it is darn difficult to find one that clearly states its policy. Best Western might be the best as it clearly states on each properities masthead where it is NS or not.
Would FT please consider this option for the 20% of the population that still wants a smoking room.

Just a suggestion but you might want to search TravelBuzz! for an existing thread on this subject or start a thread there if needed.

As a former smoker, I feel your pain...
http://www.smokingwelcome.com/ - not very thorough listing at all (in fact, almost useless), but it exists...
Most TripRewards (Cendant) and Choice hotels still offer smoking rooms - I believe many Hilton & InterContinental's still offer smoking rooms. I recall at sometime, when Marriott went non-smoking, that Hilton announced that it wasn't planning on removing smoking rooms...but I may be recalling that incorrectly.
I quit on March 17, 2007 - still think about much I loved smoking almost every day. Although I wish I was one of those people who smokes only when they drink - I know the second I inhale that sweet, sweet smoke, it'll be all over!

I feel his pain as well.
When Marriott decided to go smoke-free in Fall of 2006, I was sitting on nearly a million Marriott points. :(
And there was no way, at 3+ packs per day, that I could "dash downstairs and catch a quick smoke".
So I kicked a 40 year habit 18 months ago and am doing pretty good today except for the standard weight gain. :(
But I'm already dealing with that issue.
Problem I saw, long-term, and it's coming true, is that all decent hotel chains are going to follow Marriott's lead. And how could they do otherwise?
It's going to get to the point that a smoking hotel will be a Motel 6, at best, and even that is probably optimistic.
