I'm not going to sign up, but there is an interesting thread on Howard's Forum about how Verizon is offering an unlimited talk package for $99. It is coming on the 19th:

Looks like others will match, starting with ATT.

Though I think the target market is somewhat limited.

I'm happy where I am, with an old ATT (before Cingular) plan.

T-Mobile is the only one with voice AND messaging for the $100 price level.

AT&T is doing voice at $100. Extra $5 will add 200 messages, or $35 to add unlimited messaging. But alas, no unlimited iPhone option thus far.

Verizon's $100 plan is voice only. $120 is unlimited messaging. $140 throws in messaging plus VCast, Navigator and mobile email (through a BREW app I believe). Then there are unlimited options separately for Windows / Blackberry users.

All of them are still too pricey. I'm not doubling my Verizon $59 rate plan - which I only have because corporate discount of 24% applies - just to get unlimited voice, since I already have unlimited messaging. This needs to hit a comfort level of say, $75 a month for everything. Then I think many people will bite.

I think the price drops are just beginning.

I got in during the promo for unlimited family hotspot @ home with TMO - included minutes used dropped from almost 1000/mo to about 300 for 4 of us (one in college). Don't think I'll be needing the unlimited option :)

Same here. I still have the old AT&T sim card.

I'd love to go to one of these $99 plans, and would drop one of my two land lines. Problem is Verizon and the others can not hold a signal at my house (doesn't matter what type of phone either). I go from three bars to none often within ten seconds of starting a call. There is no consistency, and has become a real pain since I lost my job in December, and am home most of the time.

What's most irritating, I am about 2,500 yards as the crow flies from a major Los Angeles Freeway (US 101). Signals on the freeway are maximum bars.

You should look at T-Mobile Hotspot @Home. They're also coming out shortly with a landline replacement add-on - WIFI router with two SIM card slots.

Main point is that with the hotspot @home, you get service at home at least as good as your internet connection.

I have to dissagree that this will be a contraction of revenue. The average ARPU for USA companies is 50-54$ a month, and that is including things like DATA and text messaging. Less than 1 % of users go over on a monthly basis, so any amount of volume users that you can get to move to a 100$+ unlimited plan without impacting quality, I would think would increase the ARPU. Add things like more DATA, and more features Fee based income and that number goes higher.

I think the true TELCOS are going to see a further contraction, But, as an example, ATT wireless is only 30% of ATT revenues.
