Hi all

I have just been going through the new Qantas award chart and decided to have a look at the miles needed for a Brisbane to Noumea round trip.

According to the following link the distance is 916 miles which means the round trip distance would be 1,832 miles thus qualifying for the 20,000 miles award.

Can anyone confirm whether this is correct?

Thanks Peter

Why on earth wouldn't it qualify? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif

You can BUY the flight ex SYD or Bris for peanuts most months WITH accom.

In Melbourne we don't hear about such deals. I'd be interested to hear where they are advertised as it would then be worth one's while to take a cheap Internet flight to Sydney or Brisbane and then fly to NC from there. It also depends on what one calls peanuts.

By contrast one can use 30,000 Global Reward points to get to Noumea but the difference is you fly via Auckland and get a stopover. (another anomaly)

At any rate it is a peculiar that one can fly to such an international destination for 20,000 miles but it takes 30,000 miles to get to/from Perth!

cheers Peter

Peter .. it is all distance based now for QF. Noumea is a short 2.5 hour flight.

This weekend's SMH (for example) has a SIX NIGHT accom and airfare from either SYD or BNE for $A989 (well under $US500). It gets down to around $600 in low season as I recall. See what 6 nights Hotel will cost you on top of your 20,000 point "free" ticket, and there are far better uses for the 20,000 points I suspect!

I wouldn't normally comment on someone's choice of destination, unless it was a war zone, or was a total hole. Noumea, unfortunately, comes into the latter category. Why would you want to go there?

I would go along with Glen, too: If you want to use points, better to use them on expensive Australian routes.

Actually Numea can be a war zone as well as a hole! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I recall landing there on one of the last family holidays taken as a teenager (in the 80's) and our QF a/c taxi'd up to the gate and next to an APC and tank. Seems the natives were restless, and the French were employing their usual tactics.

I wasted 40000 points last year flying to Noumea. I went with a friend - both of us using points - the difference between our accommodation cost and the cost of a what a package would have cost ended up about $100 each. Still, it's a nice enough place, nearly as nice as tropical Queensland.
