Diners Club Club Rewards - Diners Club Benefits in France

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this query, but I couldn't find this topic with the search function. I'm flying out to CDG later this month to spend a week in Paris. I know DC offers discounts in some countries, but I couldn't find a list of restaurants, etc. in Paris. Does anyone know if there are restaurant discounts for DC cardholders in Paris...and if yes, will those be honoured if I use my Canadian issued DC?

I'm not sure where you heard about the discounts in some countries.

DC had a "Restuarant Savings Program" in the US (no other countries), but discontinued it a few years ago. It was administered by Rewards Network (formerly known as iDine) which runs miles-for-restaurant-dines programs for many airlines as well. (It had a different restaurant savings program before that, not sure who administered that.) Since then, DC US has had no discount programs at all. In this decade, DC US never had any discount programs overseas that I know of.

And that's rub: The DC benefits are determined by DC in the country your card is issued in, not by DC in the country you're visiting. So for example, DC members from most (all?) other countries never had access to the US Restaurant Savings Program AFAIK.

So you have to look up on our Canadian DC info (online or by phone) to figure out what benefits you have (if they're different from US).

Now that you mention it, when I said "some countries" I was probably referring to the old US programme. It's a shame that DC rewards seem to be pared down every now and then...with little to replace them. Thanks for your reply.

See, the Restaurant Savings Program was administered by Rewars Network, and the fact that it was automatically applies to your DC card meant that you couldn't use your card to earn airline miles (if you preferred miles and bonus on miles to the discounts), and the only restaurants you could get discounts at were the very same restaurants that with any other card you could have gotten miles at.

So I not only didn't use the Restaurant Savings Program, I had to avoid it (by using other cards at those restaurants, so that I'd earn miles instead).

The moment DC dropped the Restaurant Savings Program, it made it possible to use a DC as an AAdvantage Dining or Mileage Plus Dining registered card, etc. So it made it possible for the card I use the most to also become my primary dining card.

So for me them dropping the Restaurant Savings Program was a big benefit!

(IMHO the Restaurant Savings Program was poorly structured. It should have been either an "opt out", or you should have had the choice of earning bonus points -- instead of getting discounts -- at those restauarnts. Many people who get DC want points and miles and more points and more miles much more than a few discounts here and there...)
