The monthly fees are pretty high ($15) if you don't carry a $2500 balance in your Mileage checking acct. If you can't put $2500 in, then it's not worth it. Remember that you're also paid monthly miles on your average daily balance.

If you want a lower minimum, you can try the UFB Direct offer but you won't earn as many miles. I did both and stuck with BankDirect in the end.

Yes, it's a really expensive acct, of course it only makes sense if you have more than 2,500 in balance; it's also a very complicated acct. they charge an inactivity fee if you don't use the acct in 90 days (wich is really strict compared to the 12 months industry average); wich is hard for me not living up there.. But, that's what we do for miles! nobody say it was easy ;)

Is the ATM card not useable outside the US? I was pretty sure I'd used it in Europe, but perhaps not. I couldn't find anything about domestic-only on the BD website. I always carry it because my bank has no branches outside of California.

It has been awhile since I have used this card outside the U.S. But when I did, they actually reimbursed the ATM fees from a foreign country, even though the terms and conditions say otherwise.
