I'm wondering if the Smart car is big enough to hold two 22" rollaboard suitcases or not. It is quite a bit cheaper than the next car available and I've always wanted to see what the Smart cars are like.

We had a 5+ hour layover, and decided to get out of the airport, visit Ostia Antica via a 5 Euro/day SmartForTwo. As long as there are only 2 of you, I think you and your 2x 22" rollerboards should fit just fine (though a bit snug). We had the 1st generation Smart, and turning radius on that thing was shockingly horrible - I expected that small thing to turn on a dime, but if felt as if I was turning a semi truck! Talking to the smart people at the Detroit Auto Show a few weeks ago, apparently they fixed that (the redesigned car didn't look that different though). All in all, it was a fun rental, though I would be a bit concerned driving that thing on the highways for a long period of time. I had the new and old smart a couple of times. they only have the new one, therefore the suitcases should fit, but dont expect much, except small parking places. btw, sixt has in germany so many smarts right now, if you dont have a platinum card, it is likely that you get one. but smaller stations generally dont have them. Rather get it for a weekend for fun, but not for travelling with suitcases. it is not made for that. derpelikan Feb 7, 08, 2:51 pm I had the new and old smart a couple of times. they only have the new one, therefore the suitcases should fit, but dont expect much, except small parking places. btw, sixt has in germany so many smarts right now, if you dont have a platinum card, it is likely that you get one. but smaller stations generally dont have them. I am thinking of renting Smart ForTwo from Sixt when I go over to Munich next month. The only problem is that I can't drive stick. Do they have any Smart cars w/ automatic transmission? Thanks. totti Feb 10, 08, 2:25 am I am thinking of renting Smart ForTwo from Sixt when I go over to Munich next month. The only problem is that I can't drive stick. Do they have any Smart cars w/ automatic transmission? Thanks. AFAIK all Smarts can switch between automatic and stick. So you should be fine with any Smart. Maybe someone can confirm this again but actually I am quite sure. Lutz Feb 10, 08, 9:37 pm Awesome! ^ Thanks for the reply! Lutz Feb 10, 08, 10:14 pm BTW is the walk-up rate comparable to the online rate? I am seeing a pretty good deal on the website, but as I don't know my schedule is going to be, I don't want to make a reservation now and realize later I only need a car for two days instead of a week. Besides, I hear that it's virtually impossible to find street parking in Munich, so I would like to have a car only on the days we are outside of Munich. Thanks! Lutz Feb 16, 08, 11:58 am Anyone? sixtisbest Feb 29, 08, 3:05 pm Obiously the walkup rate will be at least 2 times the internet rate. probably even more. btw, smart with stick doesnt exist. the car cannot have a clutch. the only thing is that some do not have to button on the stick itself to set it into automatik, so you have to shift the gears manually, however, no clutch is necessary. (I have only seen this with a smart in the netherlands) in germany all smart have the button, even have flappypaddlegearshift on the stearing wheel. btw, I still believe its a crappy car, and am very happy that I get upgraded to a mini or 1series BMW :-) Didi Mar 6, 08, 2:29 pm I'm wondering if the Smart car is big enough to hold two 22" rollaboard suitcases or not. It is quite a bit cheaper than the next car available and I've always wanted to see what the Smart cars are like. I had once in Zurich and once in Milan. The suitcase should fit without problem. Be aware of the Milan station cheatin people. I gave the car back, was told that every thing is ok. I did therefore not check the form. The bad surprise came with the credit card statement: I was charged by Sixt Milan for cleaning, for gas and for extra fees. Of course, I did brought the car back in a clean manner and the gas was filled-up. Be careful if you want to rent from Sixt Italy! :td: Don't worry if you want to rent from Sixt Switzerland, Germany or Austria ^ |
