I am planning on renting a car in Rome - Driving around Italy for a few days and then over to Barcelona where i will end my trip attending a wedding.

Does anyone know of any way i can get around the fees rental agencies charge for dropping off in a different country? it more than doubles the price!

Personally, I'd skip the car altogether and ride the train. Italian trains are among the best in the world - regular, clean, fast, inexpensive, etc. And besides, you meet more locals that way and have time to look while riding. The train stations are usually in the center of the cities. Tickets can be obtained at the stations from either windows or machines. Credit cards or cash. From Rome, Florence is just a couple hours away and Venice maybe 4 more.

Someone suggested the train - but you stated specifically you want to drive thru three countries. Therefore, you have to pay the price to do so. In addition, different countries have different taxes and insurance regulations - all of which adds to the price.

One potential alternative is to do multiple rentals, one for Italy, one for France, then one for Spain. It may reduce the price, but maybe not. Try Europecar.com.

This is a very circuitous route.
