Thailand - Livingstones, Adelphi, Somerset hotels in Bangkok

After spending a lot of work in BKK, I've had the chance to stay in over 30 hotels / serviced apartments. I can tell you that I much prefer the serviced apartments and boutique hotels over the chain hotels like JW, Dusit, Hilton, etc... in BKK. Plus price savings was incredible. The chain hotels charge up to double what they should.

Adelphi Suites is right near the Nana BTS on Soi 8. It just opened up two months ago and the same management company opened up another serviced apartment on Soi 22 called the Legacy that I think will try later. I felt that these were very impersonal and sterile. There was no cooking pots of knives or such in the one bedroom apartment. Maybe not opened up yet and set up yet, maybe it was too early to visit them. The location was great for the BTS but Nana area is more of a night life area then a work area. If you are into the Nana scene then this is a much better location then Landmark or JW or such IMHO. They are giving free internet right now but expect that to change, we were charged 1200 baht for car service from airport to the apartment which is three time the rate of a taxi, and about 400 baht to 500 baht over what other hotels charge for car service. I expect their prices to get higher soon once they are opened up. The pool is very small.

Somerset Suwan Park, I enjoy this serviced apartment, it is more towards the shopping area of Zen and Siam's and MBK and such and near the Chidlom BTS station. The street it is off is a little hard to find and there is rarely any Taxi around but the apartments were big and staff was friendly and it is always enjoyable to stay there. The booking of the hotel is a little complicated for corporate rates and the head office is a little unresponsive, which is why I got stationed at Adelphi recently because the main office would not confirm a reseravtion in a reasonable amount of time. The other Somerset, Lake point, I did not enjoy, the rooms were small, the staff was not friendly etc... So not all somerset's are the same. The manila Somerset's are all good by the way. But for all the serviced apartments, I really enjoy Suwan Park the best of about 15 serviced apartments I've stayed at in BKK.

Livingstones... now here is a unique place. It's on Soi 33 and close to one of the BTS stations. Not sure how to describe this place as it is unique, it's a boutique hotel with an african theme. Why is the decor African? I have no idea but the restaurant is around the pool and it is very realxed. It is right in the heart of Sukhumvit area and the street has a lot of higher end hostess bars on it but the hotel is set back and you would never know you were in the heart of the Soi 33. It is like a little Oasis seperated from the rest of the Sukhumvit. The food was good both the Thai and the Western, I do go back just for the food even if I was staying other places, and they give you all day breakfast so if you sleep in late you don't miss the breakfast service. There is wifi and wired internet free so you can continue to work by the pool or in the room. But what stood out was the service I got from the staff. Not only the reception but the wait staff and the mgmt was extremely outgoing and offered great assistance. It's a great hotel for businessmen and travellers, for a quick layover or for an extended stay. It's seculded and private and was the most friendly of all locations. Smaller size with a high staff count gave good personal attention. From the top down the entire staff was there to give you get personal service, which really sets this place apart. The rooms are rooms, you spend most of your time out anyway and the rooms are comfortable, but the service I got and get is amazing.

I'd say the most relaxed location was Livingstones. No problems at all. Very relaxing, comfortable feeling. Could sit back and have a conversation with the bar staff or the wait staff or the mgmt at any time.

When I go back in a month where will I stay.... well I won't be staying at a chain hotel that is for sure. I think anyone staying in BKK who says at a chain hotel is missing out on service and paying too much. I'll most likely stay at a boutique hotel or another serviced apartment. Out of all the places I've stayed at in BKK you can't go wrong staying at Livingstones or Somerset IMHO. One is a full aparment and the other is a boutique hotel, just depends what you're looking for. But the place that made me feel the most relaxed was Livingstones.

I much prefer the Somerset Suwan Park View to other serviced apartments and virtually all the big hotels. Floor plans for the one bedroom units are quite nice, plus pretty good stocking of kitchen utensils as a small "perk". Also quite near Central Chidlom so one can shop at the supermarket there and fill refrigerator with snacks and goodies without great deal of hassle.

I agree 100%, the breakfast they give is pretty good, nothing to wake up for, but it is a nice location. The fitness area and pool and such are nice too. But check out Legacy on Soi 24 ( I think ). I've had good reports and it just opened up. I am personally going to try to check it out next trip but we have a contract with Somerset so we'll see.

Adelphi was near Food land on Soi 5, cross the BTS bridge, up a block and then up soi 5 a little way. Not too far either. And everyplace is near a 7 11 in BKK no matter where you stay. But that does little for cooking. I did like that Adelphi had a washer / dryer in the room.

Somerset Lake Point had a washer / dryer in the room too but it is not nearly as nice as Suwan Park and the location was difficult down on soi 16. Far walk to Asoke BTS. But they had a foodland right near them too.

But when it comes down to it, how many times did we really use the kitchen? We were always eating local dishes so it was only late night snakes did we ever cook up. Some late lunches and such as well but not much cooking we do. But it is nice to have the full apartment layout.

What's the average rate at a serviced apartment? Do they give
price breaks for weekly bookings?

Price Breaks usually start at the monthly range not weekly. One bedroom apartments average rate I am not sure about published rates. Corporate rates would get you about 2400 baht a night (less then 80 USD), sometimes less sometimes more depending on the property so I give you an AVERAGE of what we pay for a one bedroom apartment across the board throughout Bangkok.

I'll fourth the Somerset Suwan Park View -- I spent the better part of half a year there and loved it. It pulls off the near-impossible triple of central location, being on a quiet street and still being reasonably priced. I didn't bother with the breakfast (with a full kitchen at your disposal, it's much cheaper, tastier and healthier to make your own). However, the Japanese restaurant downstairs (Tokugawa?) did pretty decent lunches and with Central just across the road there are tons of great eating options. Alas, Central's basement food court has gone, but the supermarket still has excellent ready-to-go food and the (lunch only) stalls on the soi outside are quite good too.

Does anyone have the booking info for the Somerset
Suwan Park View or should I just try to google it?
We were thining about a couple of months stay in
BKK. Would probably be cheaper and nicer than the
IC.

As a follow up I googled but am a bit disappointed at what
I found ratewise. Their website showed the lowest rate at
3485 bhat, about $ 111.00 per night plus 12 %taxes ( this
was for a 60 night stay ), Orbitz offers it at $ 147.00 per
night. Not such a great rate or am I wrong here? I think
the Holiday Inn was only about $ 70.00 per night. Good,
I can see some differences, but $ 50.00 savings per day,
plus accumulating points isn't all that hard to take.

Sent you email.

The price is lower then that for extended stays I know it (for suwan park). There are also many other places, serviced apartments and boutique hotels that offer rates lower then what you're getting offered at the hotel. And there are apartments that have a lower cost then Suwan Park.

The Key is one boutique hotel off the top of my head that I think has lower rates, but there are hundreds. Cost should be 1,800 to 2,000 baht range for a month rate on most boutique hotels, one bedroom apartments are higher of course, 2,400 - 2600 baht range would be my goal price on "average", then you have studio's which I think you could do fine with (has kitchen) in some places are lower then the hotel costs.

Don't give up, surf around. Compass Hospitality which controls Adelphi / Legacy and about eight other properties is also out there. Emailed that to you too. I would DEFINITELY not stay in a hotel for that long. You will be paying a lot more doing it that way. And remember, BKK is all about bargaining.

Google Serviced Apartments Bangkok and or extended stay etc... There are places for a few months that semi serviced (maid service three times a week not daily and no breakfast and no restaurant on property etc...) that are even lower.

Gotta plane to catch sorry or I'd help you more directly... enjoy BKK this weekend.

Just heard today that as of April 1st Somerset Suwan Park will be operated by a new management company. Do not know which one. Tried to book some reservations today for March and May and was told they could do the march but could not do the May due to the switch.

Based on friend's experiences, I think you can get a pretty good deal if you negotiate with the Manager in person, on site. So if a goal is 2,400 baht per day offer 60,000 baht/month, then negotiate add-ons (breakfast, internet, pool, fitness, maid service, laundry, etc.). Having said that, there does seem to be more of desire to forego any income rather than generating some but at a lower price. That is to say, they would rather have the room go empty, and not make any money rather than let it out for a price they perceive as too low. The longer the commitment the lower the price, if that weren't obvious, but you can typically extend a stay based on a single month contract at the same rate.
