I am going to Vancouver in June as part of a journey down the West Coast. My itinerary will be going to Chicago for a week and then flying out to Vancouver. Then either ferry to Vancouver Island and a ferry to Seattle or just amtrak from Vancouver to Seattle. Then a flight from Seattle to SFO. Then from SFO either out to Vegas and then back to LA or down to LA with maybe a train to San Diego.
Can folks recommend a hotel which is cheap and clean in the Vancouver, San Diego and Vegas areas? I am not fussed so about stars.
Any other tips would be appreciated too.

Since you're posting in the budget forum...
You might consider staying at UBC since you're going to be up there after May 15 (school's out). The Gage Towers (student residences) are in small clusters - 4 individual bedrooms, shared full kitchen and bathroom or 6 individual bedrooms, shared full kitchen and bathroom. The views from the upper floors are some of the best in Vancouver. Security is great, you're on campus, good location to be, good access to public transportation. The desk folks host lots of conferences, so it's easy to get information about sight-seeing, tours, just about anything you might want to know.
There's also Vanier, the Pacific Hostel. It's an older, smaller residence, but you still have the option of a private single room. The location is a little less convenient, and you're sharing the bathroom and kitchen with a lot more people. I think this season it's ~$34 cdn a night. I didn't find the Gage towers prices posted yet, but I would guess-timate about $45 cdn.

You can get a cheap 3* deal on Priceline right now. It seems the favored hotel (although you cannot be certain) is the Plaza 500. It's in the middle of a construction zone at the moment, but I think it is an adequate hotel. See betterbidding.com .
One popular option is the Shaughnessy Village. I know some people like this better than a standard hotel.

One relatively simple approach is to check rates via hotwire.com and then bid about 10% less on Priceline for your selected star level and zones. If it doesn't work, inch up on PL toward the hotwire rates. If you get too close to them, take a look at the cost of the total package on each. The scales can tip either way depending on the added costs.

I would NOT stay at Gage Towers due to location almost 5 milkes away from downtown area. It;s high up in the hill so almost 1 mile from the beach.
Shaughnessey is also away from downtown more in Broadway area.
I would use priceline to bid for a 3* hotel anywhere in downtown zone. Check www.betterbidding.com and www.biddingfortravel.com for priceline winning bids for vancouver.
best to be near downtown.

In June you will be heading to Vancouver during the cruise (Alaska) season. Cheap in Vancouver in June is rarely possible. Do try the priceline or hotwire route -- you may find a bargain (especially mid-week, since most cruises leave Vancouver on weekends.)

Try the Hotel Sylvia in Vancouver - close to action and decent and clean.
