anyone recommend any cheap hostels/hotels near
the train station?(MXP)
or
in San Remo near the train station going to Monte
Carlo?

www.hostelbooking.com seems to be a pretty workable site, and it has reviews. Both my son and I have used it for other cities.

If you look at hostelz.com you will see several hostels in Milan, which is a lot better than the situation used to be.

I don't know about San Remo or Monte Carlo, but I seem to recall there is a hostel (with an uncharacteristically strict age limit) in Monte Carlo. Check hostelz.com for that too.
