Do you have any recommendations as to lowest number of ff miles/ or any specials to fly from Ca to Australia?

Is CA canada or california? It makes a big difference. United was offering under USD600 to Sydney (usually it is about USD1000). Getting FF tickets to australia is almost impossible due to the high demand.

60K on UAL or AA (via QF) coach award. Fares from LAX on specials are usually about $1000, upwards to $1500.

The big fare sales I've seen for United are offering USD 500-600 each way. Am I missing some secret fares? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

BTW I didn't buy, but I was sufficiently astonished at the price that I did price it out. Now it is back to normal prices. The fares were offered on http://www.ual.com

So long as you are flexible and book weekdays, this isn't true. I've just booked UA here to USA (in C, but there was some Y availability too) for next month and another one for Aug.

i've scowered all programs and the cheapest you'll get US to Australia is 60,000 miles. UAL, AA being the best programs.

Here is a run down on the programs -

UA - 60k
AA - 60k
QF - 80k
AC - 75k
NH - 60k (on UA metal)
NZ - 100k (only LAX to SYD direct, soon to be discontinued)
NW - 80k i think
MH - 110k

I have gotten award tickets on Qantas without any trouble at all. The key here is to book 330 days out. And if you want bus. or FC class tickets, you must be especially diligent.

Here's a tip - QF start their new A330 service from SYD-IAD from March 2003... perhaps there may be quite a few award seats available on this flight as many flyers may not be aware of this sector.

Also, the flight doesn't seem to be showing up on many reservation databases as yet...

Hmmm...

The A330-200s used by Qantas are for domestic routes - ie within Australia. Later this year, QF will introduce the A330-300 for international routes, but IAD would be pretty unlikely.

QF seats are harder to come by, just search the AA forums on the subject of availability of seats.

If you really really want QF award seats, especially in J, it's worth putting some of your miles to a QF account. QF awards on QF can be redeemed 355 days out, as opposed to 330 with AA.

It's valid between Canada/Continental USA and Sydney.

Sydney-Washinton non-stop on an AIRBUS???? Great tip, thanks. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Wow .. has anyone told Boeing about this new French secret weapon?

AFAIK the massive A380 WHEN it comes into service in a couple years time will be the only commerical aircraft able to make such a flight non-stop, of about 16-17 hours is my guess.

I believe QF's 80K awards are only LAX (whole west coast?). To/From JFK/IAD (I guess whole east coast) is 110K.

Kawoh probly means the ORD MEL service starting in March 3 times a week

For those of us with QFF cards, like Tom Price & others, QF tell us that info directly

ORD MEL is direct (with one flight number) via LAX. ORD SYD will require a change of QF aircraft in LAX
