need to go from sfo to paris.
i have 44,000 miles with UA and 12,000 with AA, is there any way i could book a 50,000 miles ticket using these 2 accounts?
any way to transfer miles from one to the other (i've heard something about hotels...)?
so far, cheapest solution i've found is to purchase 6,000 miles with UA at a price of $167. is there a better way?
thanks!

No, you can't combine miles from two programs.
You've identified the best solution. You lose value when you transfer miles to Hilton, which is what you may have heard about.
The other option is to find some other way to top off your UA balance. Apply for the Mileage Plus VISA card. The annual fee is less than purchasing the miles.

You could also use Diners Club Rewards as a "clearing house" but you will lose in value.

There are tons of ways to earn 6,000 miles without flying, although if time is not your friend (meaning you need the miles in the next few weeks, buying them may be the best bet).
But you could:
- Sign up for the UA credit card and get 15K bonus miles (as mentioned above)
- Link your existing credit card to idine using your mileage plus number, and if you spend a total of $600 at participating restaurants, you'd have your 6,000 miles
- Use FTD.com, and get 10 miles/dollar
- Switch your phone service to Sprint, and get thousands of miles
- Stay at one of the many hotels that participate in MP
Anyway, the list goes on and on. Check ual.com for the complete details.
As an FYI, depending on when you're traveling, you can get SFO-CDG tickets for under $400 (probably not the n/s though), which is a MUCH better value than spending 50K miles

Plus earn 12K or so miles for flying a money-paid ticket http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif!
