Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Lounge Access for J transit from YYZ in HKG waiting for domestic flight (not on J)?
We will be flying J on CX with my wife and father in law from YYZ and YVR, respectively, to HKG.
We will need to wait for several hours in HKG for our ownward flight domestically in China on China Southern (not in J). Is there any advice or chance that we might be able to ask CX to permit us to wait in the lounge in HKG? If so, any tips for asking. I do not think HKG has an arrivals lounge as I am used to at LHR. For my wife and I it will have been almost 16 hours on the new 777 routing from YYZ.
Many thanks in advance.

As you are transiting to China Southern, the answer is no except for MPC Gold or above. It is a benefit for MPC members. However, it won't hurt asking.
that appears to be what CX noted. turns out their J in CX's segment was full and so had to get Y on China Southern flight due to times also.
all other segments on the ticket including PEK to HKG and HKG to YVR are all J and so the agent said show them the info and they should let you in but it is really dependent upon staff.

I have a similar situation. We come in CX 889 in J and go on to HKT on KA 212 in X (econ) as there are no award seats in J on Dragonair. I'm assuming we can use the lounge during our brief 1 hour connection time. Yes?

Technically one of you needs to be OW SA or above, or both of you need to be a MPC SL to access a lounge is this case, but my feeling is that the CX/KA lounge agents will let you in a CX J lounge or the G16 (KA) lounge. However, you won't have much time - depending on the arrival departure gates and the lounge you choose - in the lounge for an one-hour transit.

Would it be advisable to ask the agents in YYZ/YVR for an HK lounge invitation before arrival? Do they even have access to such passes? That might offer some reassurance.

I seldom transit in HKG. I did a CX transit to KA in mid-2007. The check-in agent in SFO gave me the lounge pass for SFO BA Terrace but could not give the one for HKG. I got BPs for both sectors. I did not understand why (but I do not need a lounge invitation to enter anyway).
The situation should be better now, but I still doubt if the check-in agent in YVR can print a lounge invitation, esp she may not have access per CX/OW access policy.
My feeling is that if she shows up with her in-bound CX J BP and the out-bound KA Y BP, she will likely be let in. Anyway, she may not have much time to enjoy as one hour is very tight (I think MCT is 50 or 55 min.)

This really depends on the lounge agent, and honestly I've seen "no" with my own eyes...i.e., two days ago in G16. Did a day trip to PVG, flying out on the 8am departure. A couple was in arguing they had landed at 6am or something from SFO, were in J then and Y on my flight to PVG. I think they were award tix so maybe that's different (they were saying they had "redeemed" the trip a long time ago and J wasn't available for the PVG segment at that time), and the lounge lady told them to eat it...and predictably they didn't react positively, the guy was yelling and looked like an idiot. I ended up just walking around them and showing my DM card, which the lady didn't care about...she was into telling these people to shut the hell up and leave. I'm guessing they say "yes" a lot as well, but it just depends. Make sure you're nice and very friendly, because if they get on a power trip you can't really do anything it seems. They technically don't have to let you in.
why didn't you bring the two of them in as your guests... :)

KA is part of the CX group so when you check in at YVR the computer should automatically spit out a lounge invitation for both YVR and HKG based on your "first flight in J rule". It is the same that applies when you are in F for your first leg to Hong Kong and J for your second: the computer spits out a F lounge invitation for Hong Kong when you check in for both flights.
China Southern is a different story because they are a separate airline, and the MPC Gold rule applies (though given that rule was introduced because at the time CX had no presence in mainland China due to its only small stake in Dragonair, one wonders how much longer this access will last).

^^
I did that once... when I was flying from NYC to YVR and met a couple (nice ones) on the shuttle bus whom I struck up a conversation with. Turned out they're from Vancouver and were on the same flight. So I invited them to the lounge. Back then I was DM so I could.
I guess if people were nice about being refused instead of arguing and making a scene, then some people might be inclined to invite strangers into lounges.

Is there such a published rule:confused:?

Honestly, I didn't even think of that until you wrote it here, which makes me feel like a moron. It would've been such an easy solution. But the guy was being a complete prick to the lounge attendant...and I was slightly gratified in knowing that guy wasn't getting in.

I agree that you shouldn't guest them in, given the guy's behaviour.

Given the attitude description you gave on them, I would even question how they would behave inside if they got it.

Searched the forum but couldn't find a good answer. So rather starting a new thread I am using this old one.
I have a business class ticket PVG-HKG-AMS-HKG-PVG and upgraded the HKG-AMS-HKG to first class. On my return flight from AMS to HKG - PVG can I use the First Class lounge or am suppose to go to the business class lounge?
Mod: maybe good also to add these answers on the FAQ (couldnt find it there)
I don't have the answer to your question - but, in fact, is it possible to mix CX/KA together in one single Asia Miles upgrade award ? if so, and if your stopovers are within the Asia Miles award rules etc - PVG-HKG-AMS should be the same award zone as HKG-AMS, i.e. you can upgrade PVG-HKG-PVG as well without additional miles ? but one question I'm not sure is whether you can mix CX/KA in one single upgrade award...

Good one! When I got my upgrade I have asked the MPC and they said I need additional miles to upgrade to First for the PVG-HKG leg. And it could only be done on the CX flight. Also PVG-HKG don't operate every flight in 3 class config.
Got this from the OW site (read the other thread just posted):
Lounge Access by Class of Travel
Customers flying First or Business Class have access to the equivalent class of lounge regardless of their frequent flyer status.. (First Class passengers may be accompanied by one guest travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld airline).
Customers flying in Economy class on the domestic or intra-European segment to connect to or from a oneworld longhaul First or Business Class flight can also use the lounge applicable to the class in which they are travelling the longhaul segment.
Guess this will apply to intra-Asia segment as well:confused:
Don't get me wrong: business class lounge is fine as well, but if you can choose from First or Business lounge .....

Can anyone else confirm this is still the case with CX/KA?

No, it does not apply to intra-Asia segments. However, as you are flying in long-haul F to HKG and transfering to a CX/KA flight, I do believe you can get in a CX F lounge.

Sounds strange to me, why the other away around it doesn't apply:confused:
Anyway, I will give it a try!
Thanks

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that there are true int'l J/F products offered inter-Asia. Inter-Europe the best you'll get is only slightly better than economy. Much different than within Asia.

I am afraid that if you are incoming from YYZ or YVR on CX Biz Class and then on MU flight to China , CX lounge staff in HKG will not allow u into their lounge.
As for incoming from CX long haul flight Biz class (Rev or award)ticket and then onto a KA flight Economy class (same day connection) CX will allow you to use the CX lounge in HKG.

sl00001 is CX Gold, and can be admitted to the CX lounge as long as he/she is flying into HKG on long haul CX and transiting to Mainland China on any (OW or other's) flight the same day.

sl00001 is flying in from AMS on F (I presume CX F), and should therefore have access to the F lounge.

I should say "I believe sl00001 should" instead of just "should". It is undocumented, but I am quite sure I heard of that somewhere.

If you are traveling from la CX ong haul flight (F or J class) and then onto China by a non OW airline member (even if you are a CX/GO member) there is no lounge access, the policy has changed.

That sounds fair. As for my case: F long haul CX, then J to PVG, so get F lounge access

Yes , as long you are traveling on CX or KA.
The lounge staff will check the computer and everything should be ok ;)

Is that change quite recent?
Do you know why that policy was there before? It was quite strange to be there in the first place.
I'm not sure about the exact reason, but I think it was there before the KA merger...at that time many CX fares actually use MU/CA/etc as connecting flights instead of KA. (CX didn't cooperate much with KA before at all - unless you travel full fare you probably would ended up with e.g. CX+MU).
now those CX fares of course would connect to KA...so it makes sense to use just the general oneworld lounge rule.

That is probably the case. I am way behind on the policy change - seems like it went away quite quietly.

Does this mean that this Gold benefit disappeared two years ago? I seldom transit in HKG. About two years ago, before the announcement of KA passengers being able to use CX lounges, I transited CX to KA in HKG. I decided to try my luck at the F lounge and was admitted. I suppose that was when the policy was changed.

KA was not part of the MPO before, so CX offers HKG lounge access for GO/DM passengers having long-haul to Mainland connections because they cannot possibly travel on CX metal (except for the limited service to PEK and XMN).
