I have a two-day stay booked in CMB at the Park Street hotel but reading about the bomb blast today on the airport road didn't make me feel that great...
Has anyone had any experience travelling here recently? I know there are roadblocks throughout...

Check also Current CMB Safety Concerns? (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=688428) thread in MR Discussion. Some discussions recently in the MR Deals (of course relating to dates of our CMB fares!). (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=751016&page=106)
I'm thinking Negombo beach area (10km north of CMB instead of Colombo) or maybe the Taj Airport Garden hotel as a good base.

Anybody have any updated news on the ground in Sri Lanaka? The US State Department has just issued an updated Travel Warning (http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_3011.html)--"The Department of State warns American citizens traveling to or living in Sri Lanka about the potential for continued instability, including possible terrorist attacks"--even given the announced victory over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
I am not planning on going until January so I would really expect things to settle down by then.

I'll be there in a few days, and will post an update in a couple weeks.
That said, things must be really hurting. The Hilton is now selling rooms for $50, down from the usual $100-125.

I was there two weeks ago. Other than an incredibly high profile army presence at night (5 checkpoints from airport to Cinnamon Grand, including 2 passport inspections) it was fine. Quiet, but fine.

I'm in the airport ATM. A great time the past week and a half in Colombo, Galle, Kandy and elsewhere. Chalk it up as another overblown and useless report from the US Dept of State and it's insulated idiotic minions.
