I'm flying Korean Air for the first time from BKK-NRT-ORD. I don't fly very often due to the fact that I have an irrational fear of flying; hence I am obsessed with flying with only the safest airlines possible when I do fly. I initially booked my flight through Delta only to later realize that my flight back to the US is actually a Korean Air flight. I know that Korean Air has a very shady past and is overhauling their program but I am still terrified of flying with them. I am seriously considering paying hundreds of dollars more to fly with Northwest instead. Can you please provide any advice or any articles that can highlight Korean Air's safety record...is the company safe? Thank so much.

Based on your post, I would recommend paying more and flying a name you know. Nothing we say will help, most likely.

That being said - they have a perfectly fine safety record. You can search http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/query.asp to satisfy your fears for any airline you choose to fly. All have incidents at one time or another. Very seldom are they significant. (DISCLAIMER: This website mainly has flights that had incidents in US airspace. There are exceptions.)

I could be wrong, but if your routing is correct (BKK-NRT-ORD), it is likely that none of your flights will be operated by Korean as they fly non-stop BKK-ICN and ICN-ORD. If you're connecting through NRT it is probably UA, NW, or TG that you're flying.

Regardless, as was already mentioned, they all have excellent safety records and I wouldn't hesitate to fly on any of them.

The safety issue with Korean Air is a history, now.
The company is not what it used to be.
Although, no airline has destroyed so many B747s than KE.:D
By the way, as a former sales manager for a Korean firm,
I have flown KE over hundred times in the past seven years.
If I include Korean domestic flights, I probably would have flown over some four hundred times. And here I am.
I would be more cautious in choosing a safer Taxi to the airport than worrying about Korean Air.

I would have to second that! If you speak english, you are better off getting a taxi with a younger man driving. More of a chance that they will understand you. Most taxis have free translators via cell phone if you need them.

As for KE, the service is great and I have yet to crash into the pacific.

It sometimes amazes me how KE still has such reputation amongst some fliers... even amongst frequent fliers!

Nonetheless, it also reminds me that many goods and one bad can lead to bad for the general public.

I have flown KE long haul and short haul and as far as I can tell I had a better chance of "expiring" while not paying attention crossing the road at NGO to check in than I did on any of the flights (usually JFK-ICN, ICN-HKG, HKG-ICN, ICN-NGO, ICN-NRT, also done DFW-ICN and ICN-CDG).

Looking at flying them NRT-LAX possibly in the next month for a way home......won't hesitate to book it if it matches my schedule.

Flights are safe, generally on time, crew is attentive, cabin is warmer than a sauna. For customer service and attentiveness in-flight, I'd strongly suggest KE over NW. (do they even fly NRT-ORD without a stop in ICN?)

You'll be fine, relax.

There is a better chance you'll die in a car crash than flying to your death. If you're worried about KE's safety, you haven't flown much my friend.

Now in all fairness, Air India and China Airlines have both only destroyed one less 747 each than Korean Air has.

In all seriousness though, they are all safe today. KE and CI both had terrible records at one point in time, but there have been no incidents in such a long time that its not even a consideration anymore. They are now operating very modern aircraft as well.
