Have checked for some LCC options via the sticky at the top of the forum, but so far have come up pretty dry re Budapest and Madrid. I'll be in Budapest this spring for a couple of weeks, then my wife will join me and we plan to fly to one or two other places in Europe. One strong possibility is Madrid, where we have some friends. Others, for various reasons, are Amsterdam, Prague and Oslo.

My question is: Are there any good LCCs operating between Budapest and Madrid or between either of these two cities and the other three I mentioned? I guess between Budapest and Prague the train is a viable option (though that's probably a full day, right?), but otherwise we'd prefer to fly just for the sake of saving time.

I realize that using Easy Jet via London would allow cheap flights to many places in Europe, but would prefer not to connect if possible. If this proves the best option, though, are Gatwick and Luton as much of a hassle to transit through as Heathrow is?

I guess the other options, if they exist for these places, would be any discount tix on mainstream carriers or tix that allow a taking a few different flights within Europe for a set price.

Thanks for any advice.

It's about ~ 6 hours to Prague via train, so if it were me, I would train it. What with the time and cost of getting to the airport & needing to get in early since it's international travel...

From Prague, you can fly SkyEurope (and probably other carriers) to Amsterdam.

Alternatively, if you're not set on those cities, you could go Budapest -> Vienna (~3 hrs) -> Prague (~3 hours), all via train.

If you can't tell, I'm a big proponent of train travel in Europe. You might want to investigate (unless someone knows better) overnight trains. When I was in Europe some years back, I took this incredible, luxurious, and comfortable overnight train from Florence to Amsterdam. I have often wished that there were better overnight travel options in the United States. Slept like a baby and got to wrap the cost of travel & lodging into one. Now I'm just rambling, but I also took this amazing overnight bus in China from Guilin (sp?) to Guangzhou. You took your shoes off at the entrance and there were rows and rows of mini beds (no seats). It made no stops, and before I knew it, we were there.

Smartwings flies nonstop between Budapest and Madrid, though they don't have flights every day.

If you haven't checked www.skyscanner.net, take a look at that site...it's a great booking tool for LCCs.

Also try www.dohop.com - it's sometimes more creative about connections

You can also fly to Barcelona from BUD on Wizzair (they use an airport 50 miles from the city but there are superb highways and the bus gets you into the city almost as fast as the BCN airport bus! Might be a good alternative to MAD if you don't have your heart set on Madrid (most people like Barcelona better, though they are quite different).
