Asia - HKG transit question; Cathay to Cebu Pacific

I am flying into HKG from NYC on CX (originating from DCA on a codeshare AA/CX flight). I then catch a 5J flight into Cebu. Does anyone know if I will need to go through customs, etc., claim my bags, check in with Cebu Pacific, then go through security again? From the googling I've done, there doesn't seem to be an interline agreement between CX and 5J. Any chance of checking baggage through from DCA all the way to Cebu?

The layover is about 5.5 hours, so worried about the hassle more than the time.

Ditto on an Oasis/5J connection at HKG as I'm meeting friends in Cebu from london....

Thanks in advance for any replies.

As you arrive at the HKG airport, follow the signs for Transfer point E2.
There you'll find some desks with various airlines names above them, just find the proper one and present the Cebu e-ticket. You may find that CX will check your luggage all the way through to Philippines.

When I left Manila in June on Cebu Pacific, with a transfer in HKG to CX to LAX and a separate ticket on AS to Seattle, Cebu checked my bag all the way through to Seattle (although I had to claim in in LAX in order to clear customs and immigration and had to re-check in at AS).

The HKG airport is very efficient. Clearing customs and immigration and going through security again is no big deal. I did it when I had a long layover, so that I could check out the shopping over in Terminal 2.

So glad to find this thread! Good information - thanks...

And the inevitable question....(:D) I need to get to MNL.. and would like to fly to HKG on NZ and go from there....... choices ex HKG seem to be CX or 5J (at 30% of the CX fare)...

How is 5J to fly with?

5J - Cebu Pacific - is a budget airline. Legroom is less, you pay for drinks (even water). But out of HKG, it seems to run pretty much on time, and it is only 2 hours flight. Since you are transiting, you will have your bags checked through all the way.

Only you can decide if a tiny bit less room and service are worth the savings.

For 2 hours or thereabouts.... Yup!

Thanks for that.. much appreciated... I will simply build in ample "extra time" at both ends...

I had no complaints on my Cebu Pacific flights. Legroom was fine. Yes you do pay for everything. But it's only a two hour flight from HKG. My flights all left and arrived on time. I was able to book online.

I have another trip scheduled for February. Flying SEA to TPE to MNL on China Airlines.

I do have a trip to Bohol on Cebu Pacific planned for while I'm there, but I was unable to book it online and instead had to send money via Western Union to a friend in the Philippines to book my tickets. Something to do with credit card fraud on their end, so they quit accepting US based Visa and Mastercards.
Same problem at Western Union too... used to be able to send it online with my debit card, but now I have to appear personally to send money.

drc78 - just make sure they tag your luggage all the way to Cebu from your starting point. Had a UA flight from DCA to MNL via HKG connecting to Cathay Pacific (CX) to MNL and UA did not tag my luggage to MNL. Noticed at check-in that they failed to check me thru all the way to MNL, and after much discussion, they tagged my luggage all the way to MNL. And all I had to do in HKG was to get my boarding pass from CX. Certainly less of a hassle and minimize discussions about luggage allowance since HKG to MNL is only 20kg, while from US, it would be 2 pieces @50 to 70lbs each.
