Central America - $$$ in RTB

I will be going to Roatan in a few days. I keep getting conflicting advice from everybody as to how much money to bring and the availability of banks, ATMs, or places that accept travelers checks or Visa/MC down there.

Has anybody been lately and can you advise me on what to do (bring only US dollars, get a ton of travelers checks, or something else?)
