I am hoping to travel from AMS to LIS some time in January, but I was disappointed to see that $59 r/t fares cost $250+ after taxes and fees! Is there any way to avoid paying a 500% tax on cheap fares between AMS-LIS? Any suggestions as to how to cheaply get from AMS to LIS would be appreciated.

Not sure what you were pricing but checking on http://www.airberlin.com/site/index.php?LANG=eng

the lowest fare with taxes is 77 Euros. So you might want to check with Air Berlin

Thanks for the tip on Air Berlin. Looks like it could be a great deal, but I can't get the website to book an LIS-AMS return. Not sure if they don't fly that route or if the website is just acting up today.

Hopefully you can find a good Air Berlin deal.

If you don't, your alternative might be www.transavia.com from Amsterdam to Faro. There are 5 trains from Faro to Lisboa per day - they take around 3 hours and cost just under 20Euros

On the other hand, Air Berlin probably doesn't have direct flights between AMS and LIS so there probably just is no convenient connection the other way. A LCC + LCC or train + LCC option may well be cheapest, I don't think a $250 r/t is unreasonable though.

You are correct they show no return flights to AMS, weird...lots of AMS to LIS...you might email their customer service
serviceteam@airberlin.com and see what they recommend.

For future ref this is a good site for finding low cost flights in Europe

tsastor: The lowest fare I had found using Lufthansa did have $173 of taxes and fees ($190 on Orbitz) on a $54 fare. These are the taxes/fees that the Lufthansa website lists for the cheapest AMS-LIS flight:

Taxes and Fees Details
Below you see the total taxes and fees amount for one passenger broken down into its components.

Fuel and Security Surcharge (YQ) USD 88.00
Security Tax (International) (PT) USD 5.91
Noise Isolation Charge (VV) USD 2.93
Passenger Service Charge - Intl (RA) USD 32.18
Passenger Service Charge (RN) USD 17.73
Security Service Charge (CJ) USD 15.90
Passenger Service Charge - Intl. (YP) USD 10.71
Total USD 173.36

Thank you for all of the recommendations on LCC flights. I have emailed Air Berlin to see if they can recommend a routing, though I do agree that $250 or so is not terrible. Thanks again!

The "taxes and fees" include a € 28 fuel surcharge. Anyway, US$ 250 is about € 170 which is quite cheap for AMS - LIS.
