If you're looking for an all-in-one handheld for travel - and EDGE speed is fast enough for send/receiving your email - Amazon has the iPAQ 6925 (http://www.amazon.com/hw6925-Mobile-Messenger-Smartphone-Windows/dp/B000KX3FRC/ref=pd_bbs_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1196705961&sr=8-10) for dirt. It's cheap because it's locked to Cingular, but I believe you can overcome that limitation by downloading generic firmware from HP.com - but first I'd call AT&T and just ask to have it unlocked. You might get lucky after a few tries.
This is "last year's" model, but it does everything I want to do, at least for the moment. You can get smarter/faster devices like the Wing or Tilt, but without a contract they're obscenely expensive.
I've used an iPAQ of one kind or another for 6 years, and I highly recommend them for a totally integrated travel machine. I get about eight hours on a battery if I'm not watching a movie, but I carry a hot spare in my pocket in case I run out of juice. The only thing my first iPAQs had that I miss is the 3:4 screen. Some stuff doesn't look/work right on a square one.
With WiFiFoFum and Skype for Windows Mobile, I used it as a free international pocket telephone with no issues.
Specs are here (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/pscmisc/vac/us/product_pdfs/HP_iPAQ_hw6900_Mobile_Messenger_Data_Sheet.pdf)
