Asia - Cambodia: "snatch and grab" a serious concern?

How frequent are snatch and grab robberies in Cambodia?

I am traveling to Phnom Phen and Siem Reap in February. One of the websites discouraged taking large cameras and/or camera bags as they are easy targets for motorcycle bound thieves.

Anyone have further insight? As much as I'd miss playing with the DSLR, I'd miss the DSLR even more if snatched.

Just came back from PP and SR last week. I was in PP during the water festival, probably the most people on the prawl and had no issues. I kept a mid sized bag over my shoulder under one arm with my camera, wallet, pport etc. Never saw any thieves nor was there attempts on me. You have to be smart though. The streets are generally pretty busy with motos and people.

SR seemed much more tame and touristy. Wouldn't worry much up there, but always be smart.

I agree with JHOC. I was there in October - PNH and REP. Cycled from PNH to Sihanoukville and rode the motos everywhere in PNH, REP and Sihanoukville, day and night. A couple of the folks I was cycling with carried large SLR's slung over their shoulders all the time. Never felt unsafe. Exercise the same precautions you would in any major city or crowd anywhere and I think you'll be fine! I should add, the couple times I rode in a tuk-tuk, including once with local folks, the drivers cautioned me to keep my rucksack on my lap or at my feet, not just casually laid on the seat next to me. Good advice, of course, but advice I also follow here in the US.

BTW, it was my first visit to Cambodia and I look forward to going back. Had an absolutely wonderful time! :)

I have a few months before I leave so I'm going to look at getting insurance, as well as examining whether AMEX buyer protection covers theft, and for what duration post-purchase.

Either way, I think I'd miss not having a nice camera with me, so it is coming along.
