Newsstand - "Fuel burning and air fee dodge"View Full Version : "Fuel burning and air fee dodge" patgarrett Dec 2, 07, 10:20 pm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7124021.stm GUWonder Dec 2, 07, 10:24 pm Is airlines doing this any different than passengers taking a longer route to avoid toll roads or to avoid airport taxes/fees? planemechanic Dec 3, 07, 3:36 am I think their math is off in several ways. Direct routing = 4 hrs 17 mins, 14.7 tons of fuel Ocean routing = 3 hrs 57 mins, 13.1 tons of fuel I think it is safe to assume that the extra 20 minutes is in cruise, the most fuel efficient portion of the flight. They are saying that 20 minutes of flying used an additional 1.6 tons, or 12.2 percent of the total fuel. At that rate of fuel burn they would be burning fuel at a rate of 4.8 tons per hour and not have enough fuel to remain aloft for more than 2.7 hours (with 13.1 tons of fuel) or 3.06 hours (with 14.7 tons of fuel) Then you need to add in the crew cost of 20 additional minutes and the added maintenance for those items tracked by the hour. Besides which it is no different than avoiding a toll road to save money on tolls. |
