Compliments of the Season,
As much as I have previously shunned any desire to take a trip that doesn't involve staying (and heavily breathing) in big city, I have recently been curious in traveling to Pakistan to view the Karakoram Highway. I would be leaving from Singapore, but firstly I'm not sure which months are the most pleasant to visit (granted, winter is a definite no, and the heat really does not bother me. I wear pants all the time anyways). The few months I've thrown about are March, May and September, and I've found some decent deals on Thai Airways or Malaysian (in the US$600s), but perhaps an open-jaw SIN-KHI (Karachi; just to get my megacity fill in) ISB (big city, and yes Rawalpindi is nearby, but ehh)-SIN, all via Bangkok or KL, would suit me best.
As a brutally honest neophyte when it comes to trekking, taking in clean air or I guess being a bucolic backpacker, ...could I just show up at the Rawalpindi start of the Highway and hike? Do I need permits that are only available in Pakistan? Is it recommended that I buy a domestic ticket to Gilgit as well? It is not necessary that I go to China, so would that complicate things if I just wanted a taste of what this scenic region has to offer?
Thanks for your assistance.
