My wife and I both have separate Hilton Amex credit cards.
However we have a joint Hilton frequent points account.
Is there any downside in having my wife transfer her credit card so its a
second credit card on my account and easier to get gold status? (spending
$20,000.)

Hey Sheepherder.
I'm in the same situation: separate Amex accounts but joint points. In our case, both cards feed into the same account -- the same for you, I assume?
In the past I've had no problem making status (Diamond mainly, some Gold) based on stays, then last year Gold based on Amex spend. This year I'll likely be under $20k myself, but I know between us we will have $20k on our two cards feeding into that same account. Have you (or any others out there) either qualified -- or failed to qualify even after bringing it to their attention -- based on the spend from both?
I've reviewed the Ts & Cs a number of times looking for this scenario, but have not found anything.
To your original question re: downsides: In our case, I've hesitated to combine the two cards into one account because we both use the card for business expenses, and it is easier to track costs if they appear on separate statements. Otherwise, we do not seem to receive separate offers / bonuses that we would lose out on if they were combined -- at least not enough to worry about compared to Gold status.
