Ok, it is only one night, but I am in the Presidential Suite of the Marquette in Minneapolis, having booked an ordinary king bed room. Now to be sure it is smaller than many suites in Vegas, but what a nice surprise. The check-in guy says, well sir, Diamond has it's privileges.

Lucky you--the best In ever got was a large "suite" (one huge room) at the Hilton in Buenos Aires. Beautiful hotel. But that was certainly not the Presidential Suite.

Did get a suite at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. But it's not my kind of style--more "old world" rather than modern (which is the case with the Hilton Buenos Aires).

Did get the Presidential Suite at the JW Marriott in Rio while a Platinum Premier--but am still waiting to be wowed at a Hilton or Conrad...

My best upgrade was to the Presidential Suite at the Hilton Glendale CA. A very attractive, tall blond lady checked me in and informed me "I'm sorry Mr. PGF, your room is not available, so we've had to upgrade you to the Presidential Suite." My response was naturally "I hate when that happens!" with a nice ;) to the lovely lady.

Immense room (rooms really) that was very nicely furnished. Only a one night stay though.

Mine was a few years ago, before the Diamond level expanded so much.
Milan Hilton - penthouse suite - we could have had dinner for 10 in the dining room - very vice.

I once got a suite an an Embassy Suites.

Seriously, I very seldom get upgraded. Certainly no more than 10% of the time. Then again, since I seldom spend any waking hours in a hotel room, I don't care and don't push for upgrades. (I do much better with Starwood and Hyatt, incidentally.)

I did have a basic suite once at the Waldorf=Astoria. My total 'stay' time was three hours, all of which I slept.

I've been lucky to have been upgraded to the Presidential Suite at the Austin Hilton downtown about 8 times. Super room with an awesome view.

A few months ago a co-worker and I unexpectedly needed a room near the Toronto Airport. I called my travel agent who booked us 2 king rooms at the DoubleTree near YYZ. Upon arrival, my coworker checked in & was told "Sorry, sir, we're all out of king rooms. However, I've upgraded you to a nice corner king room for the evening." His face lit up & he was tickled to death as a silver who doesn't travel much (and the cookies helped too).

He got his keys and waited for me. When I checked in, they told me the same, "Sorry, no king rooms left for the night" but continued with "We've upgraded you to the Pres. Suite." My coworker immediately was immediately let down with his 'upgrade' when he heard what I got. It had the full dining room table, sitting room with couches, large bedroom, etc. that you'd expect in a Pres. Suite. Unfortunately, I don't go to YYZ often enough to repeatedly stay with them.

My mother and I were upgraded to the Mayoral Suite at the Millenium Hilton NYC a few years back. We had stayed at the hotel the week before and got a junior suite which she thought was great. When we looked in the room (they never told us we were upgraded to the Mayoral Suite at the desk... left it as a surprise), she was in awe. I told her that was the benefit of staying at the same family of hotels all the time. I then told her that the funny part was the room was $10 less than the previous week (and who would believe that I got it for $159 in March of 2004).

At the Manchester (UK) Airport Hilton I was upgraded to a huge suite at the end of the hall. It had 2 bathrooms, a living room, and a large bedroom. I've lived in apartments that were smaller than this suite. It was a shame that I was only there for about 12 hours. I wasn't given this room to begin with though. They put me in a regular king room, but a smoking room by accident and I went back to the front desk and they moved me to the large suite. They did't say anything about the suite just gave me a new key. I was really shocked and felt like I had won the lottery.

I never get upgraded at Hilton (proper) hotels. I've done much better at ES, where I scored an pres/exec suite with 2 king rooms, 3 bathrooms (one for each room, and one for the suite) 8 person table dining table, foyer, doorbell, sitting area and a 50 in or so plasma in the main sitting area, 36 in plasma's in each room. I've also scored numerous corner exec suites, one with an 8 person conference table.

My best room upgrade was in the Palmer house in Chicago. My wife and I took a quick weekend break last summer (2006) and spent 2 nights there on reward. We traveled separately (she came in an hour or so before me). I called form the train in from Midway and asked if she had gotten into the room (I called ahead an asked if they would let her in even though I had the certs). She said yes and I asked how the room was. She said she liked the dining room table! When I got here we had a full suite (lock off bedroom and bath with adjoining 35+ x 20 foot dining room / living room complete with dining room table for 12, wetbar, two sofas, and 2nd full bathroom). Not bad for $0. Best was I got to use it on vacation instead of business and got to share it with my wife. HHonors desk (they do not have diamond desk) even slipped note under door saying "Diamonds are a Hilton's best friend".

Yep, the same suite that OUR Pres. Bush had been placed in 3 years earlier. Three-night stay and, yep we were very surprised. Four adults had booked two reward rooms under my Diamond#. Upon check-in, the manager very sincerely asked us if we still preferred two rooms or would all of us like to share the Pres. Suite. The master bathroom was fitted with marble arches, we felt like the sultan's harem. Wrap around balconies facing east to the Bosphorus and west to the sunsets that we will never forget while listening to the call to prayer. A wonderful introduction to exotic travel.

My best was a Suite at the Chicago Conrad a couple weeks ago for my birthday. I even got a birthday card from the staff. And extending my streak to 2 in a row :) I just got back from a jr. suite at the DT Crystal City. Not as big a score once I figured out there was a lot of jr. suites on the property but I did appreciate the space as I was there all week.

My wife and I booked a room on-line for a two-night visit to Santa Fe last year; we got the old "room to be determined on arrival" notice. When we did arrive, we were escorted to an old house around the corner that had two exceptional suites. Ours had a sumptuous living room, done in the classic Santa Fe style, complete with a bee hive fireplace in one corner and a great bar/kitchenette in another. The whole place was artfully done in antiques. It really made our stay in Santa Fe special.

Tuesday, Sep 11 2001 we were headed for LAX and a trip to Australia on QF - not. We checked in at the Doubletree Bakersfield (CA) and were upgraded to the Presidential Suite. We eventually drove to Long Beach and holed up in the Hilton (upgraded to a very nice room, not Pres. Suite, but very flashy,) until we departed Saturday (iirc) on the first flight to Brisbane (connected to Townsville and made out dive boat by a couple of hours.)

I was also dealt the "sorry, we are sold out - but we have held the Presidential Suite for you" at Embassy Suites Portland - Washington Square in Tigard, OR.

Upgraded to one of the honeymoon suites at Hilton Guam on lowest rate (multi-night.)

The absolute nicest was an upgrade on an award stay at the Conrad Tōkyō to a huge 32nd floor corner suite with views of the Hamarikyu Gardens and Sumida River on our 41st anniversary (we met literally at the feet of the Great Daibutsu in Kamakura, and married in Tōkyō.) (We'd originally planned for Boston - but fares and eVIPs boded better for Japan, Boston was hit by a completely vicious storm that would have seriously crimped our trip and the award was also available in Japan.)

Just recently had a stay in October at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak in Phoenix and although we only booked a standard suite, was upgraded to the Grand Suite, Room 1401. We couldn't believe the size of the suite. Double front doors accessed the large hallway with King bedroom off hall with LCD tv, gas fire, small balcony and marble en-suite bathroom with jacuzzi and walk-in shower. Large lounge/sitting area with gas fire and LCD tv and dvd system and small balcony. Dining room area off the hallway with large table. There was also a seperate kitchen with microwave and large fridge/freezer and also 2nd w.c off the hallway. Amazing upgrade! We didn't want to leave.

Also had a great upgrade last year at the Hilton Dubai Creek. Booked an Executive room and as Diamond, was upgraded to a large penthouse suite with huge balcony - absolutely wonderful. Great views from the balcony. Suite had 2 bathrooms, one of which had a jacuzzi and large walk-in shower.

At the Hilton Waikola Village this summer, I was given a huge two-room suite on the top floor of the Ocean Tower, with a perfect view of the ocean and lagoon from the lanai.

Not the Duke suite, but apparently one of the top-five suites at the property, according to staff I spoke with.

This was on a six-night award stay, making the upgrade that much more special.

I've been quite lucky with some great upgrades.

Most recently at the brand new, Hilton Branson Convention Center in Branson, MO I was upgraded to what a Presidental Suite (Condo) on the top floor. Huge suite (2 bathrooms, full kitchen, full dining room, living room, walk in closets, multiple flat panel tvs, etc.). Other times I've received theme suites (not sure if they even still have them) at the Palmer House in Chicago, various luxury suites at the Waldorf Towers, Alii Tower Suites at the HHV, Presidential Suite at the Hilton Springfield (Springfield, IL), Villa at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort, and a variety of other upgrades that I cant remember.

Was attending a conference in Salt Lake. The hotel was totally booked for the conference group. I guess they had to give big suite to someone and it was my lucky day. I had just ruptured my achilies tendon and was on crutches post op. The only time I have ever had a bellman carry my bags. As we aproched the room i turned to go into the room with my number, he said we'll use the third door. What a great suite....... The only problem was it was in the winter and I had planed to ski. Powder days every day and I had to spend it in the hotel.....oh well....

My one and only upgrade to a suite was at the Hilton Budapest Castle (but I had to ask for it).

My experience is that the Hiltons try anything to not upgrade you to suites. Once in a while I had even to be happy to be upgraded to the exec. floor.

My three favorite upgrades are:

Silver Spring, MD - just outside DC, I was there for 1 night alone and got a huge suite with a parlor, bedroom, and separate conference room. It was larger than my apartment.

At the Las Vegas Hilton I received a huge North tower two-room suite with a bar, murphy bed, and multiple flat screen TVs. All for $39.99 a night!

And my favorite was the junior suite upgrade to the executive level I received at the Waldorf Hilton in London. It's the only one I've ever received while travelling with the family - which makes it my favorite because I actually needed it!

I've had several memorable upgrades as a Diamond.

1) One night upgrade to the rooftop suite at the Doubletree Alana Hotel Waikiki - complete with roof garden, and outdoor canopied asian themed sitting deck - much better than anything ever at the Hawaiian Village!

2) Upgrade to a Waldorf Towers multi-room suite (ones they rent out as apartments - it was second floor from top - the Hilton girls apparently have the digs on the top floor)

3) Upgrade to nice, mutli-room suite at the Conrad Chicago for three days

My best upgrades (back during the two years when I had Diamond) were at Paris Las Vegas (when they were part of the Hilton family).

Several times I was upgraded to these huge suites named after different cities in France. The rooms were huge - full long dining tables and three couch setup in the main room (with its own bath off the entry), bedroom with a TV in a dresser at the foot of the bed that raised up when you hit power (probably spent 30 minutes playing with that up and down the first time I was upgraded), and a very nice master bathroom with jacuzzi. Most overlooked the "Eiffel Tower" and the Bellagio fountain.

I think I got a large suite 5 times over the two years. Three stays were business, so it was comfortable but wasted to some degree as I was mostly out of the room. But two stays were with my wife, which was great. I stayed a couple other times and was upgraded to junior suites - which were still nice - but nothing like the big ones. Paris really treated Diamonds well (and even now I have been able to talk myself into a better room by pulling out my old Diamond card).

Unfortunately those Vegas stays were about the only time I was upgraded as a Diamond in two years, and then they devalued the hundreds of thousands of points I earned getting Diamond, which is why I stopped staying with Hilton. They only got 1 of my 48 hotel nights this year.

Will add one last thing. Got a nice upgrade at the Trafalger Hilton in London fall 2006 as a lowly Silver that I would count as one of my best Hilton upgrades. I remember staying there as a Diamond right after they opened (2003?) and it was like they had never heard of Diamond. Not sure if my upgrade last year was a room availability thing, them getting friendlier about HHonors, or because I have stayed there a few times now?

Upgrade to suite at Hilton on the Park Melbourne

And OT, upgrade to suite at the Ritz Carlton Seoul, where I had never stayed before. Desk person said welcome back, we've upgraded you to a suite. I said, uh, okay.

Lots of space for one person. Unfortunately, my wife has never been with me when I've been upgraded. And I've learned that she really doesn't want to hear about my upgrades when she's been at home watching four kids while I am gallivanting around on business for two weeks, not that that's a party.

Our experience at the Waldorf was simply out of this world. I am a Hilton Hhonors Diamond level frequent sleeper and made our reservation 11 months in advance redeeming points for a free nights stay. Then a week before we arrived I wrote the general manager a snail mail letter advising him we would be staying there on our wedding night. The results were astonishing.

I received a call two days before our arrival from someone at the Waldorf telling me that we had been upgraded to a luxury suite and inquiring our estimated arrival time. When we did arrive we were driven by a car service and were directed from the front of the building on Park Ave. to the Towers entrance on 50th St. There a bellman took our luggage and gave me a chit as we then went to the top of Rockefeller Center for sunset.

When we arrived back at the hotel to check in there must have been 14 available desk clerks able to assist us. The one we approached noted on his computer that it was our wedding night and asked if we liked champagne. The form for redeeming the room with points was in my luggage, and the clerk told us not to worry. I exchanged the luggage chit for the room key and off we went.

Our room, 14H, was a corner suite. There was a marble foyer with a wet bar; a sitting room with sofa, chairs, fireplace and built in bookcases (with books); a bedroom with a four poster king size bed and a walk in closet with two robes; a dressing room with a make up table, fainting sofa and a five foot by seven foot floor standing mirror; and a marble tiled bathroom with his and her sinks, a shower in a tub AND a shower stall (with five nozzles) and the toilet ~in~ a closet. The windows inthe various rooms looked out on Park Ave except for one in the living room which overlooked 49th St. and down Park Ave. to the Met Life building.

Just a few minutes after we arrived there was a buzz at the doorbell (!) and a bellman arrived with our luggage. He carried all the bags into the dressing room where he unfolded the luggage stands and set our suitcases on top of them. When I couldn't find my jacket with my wallet to tip him he waved "no thanks" and let himself out of the door.

On a table in the living room was a tray with an ice bucket and a bottle of Waldorf-Astoria Champagne, a plate of chocolate dipped strawberries, two flutes and a note from the general manager thanking us (!) for choosing to spend our wedding night with them. We sat on the sofa and sipped our champagne, ate the berries and relaxed our first night as husband and wife. Just as we were finishing the doorbell rang again and another (!) bottle of champagne and plate of strawberries were delievered. The note on this tray was from the clerk who checked us in.

I ordered a room service breakfast, hung the card on the door, and we put the second bottle and berries in the fridge in the wet bar for the morning. The bed was wonderfully comfortable. In the morning our breakfast was delivered at the exact time we had checked on the form, and though I laughed a lot at the $73 charge for six muffins, two glasses of juice and a pot of coffee, it was worth every penny.

The cart was wheeled in with a linen tablecloth and napkins. Two folding leaves easily opened up to make it a nice size table. The butter was in an urn sitting atop a pile of ice to keep it chilled. The muffins melted in my mouth and the croissants so buttery they didn't need any more. There was real cream for the coffee, which was rich and dark. The silverwear was heavy and the plates monogramed with the distinctive Waldorf-Astoria logo.

We enjoyed a leisurley breakfast, and then opened the other bottle of champagne and ate the strawberries in a hobbittlike second breakfast. I called and inquired about a late check out, but was told none was available. We didn't vacate the room until about 12:30, which was still fine with us and no on had any issue with that at all.

As we were leaving the room I opened the card that came with the second bottle of champagne. In it was a coupon for breakfast for two at Oscar's, one of the restaurants on site. When we were checking out in the lobby I mentioned to the clerk that we hadn't used it because we'd ordered room service and he converted it to lunch for two.

We gave our bags to a bellman and walked around the city a bit before heading to lunch. There was no problem using the coupon, which included both an appetizer and an entree. We, of course, had to try a Waldorf salad.

We went to retrieve our bags in the bowels of the building and thought we would have to then roll them out front to Park Ave where the car to take us to the airport was supposed to meet us. The bellman asked us our name and who the car service was, told us to have a seat and he called the service, the car materialized in the undergound passageway, the bags were loaded in the trunk and the rear door was held open for my wife. What incomparable service!

I know our experience is not the norm, but we didn't want the norm when we planned to spend our wedding night at the Waldorf-Astoria. Every person we encountered there, from bellmen to desk clerks to the bartender in the restaurant was polite to a fault, gracious and warm. I had high hopes for a memorable stay when I booked the Waldorf, and they were exceeded beyond my wildest dreams.

That is a most excellent wedding story, congratulations on what sounds like a fantastic experience.

Best upgrades I've had:

Boston Financial Center - upgrade from basic room to very nice suite with dining room etc., bigger than apartments I have lived in

Hilton New York (yesterday!) - upgraded from basic room at $219 (yes, you read that right, $219 - must be low season here) to a top-floor suite with 2 bathrooms. I can't imagine what this suite goes for in high season.

I think the biggest upgrade I ever got was to the vice presidental suite in Downtown Salt Lake city. The bedroom was a standard hotel room, but was attached to a huge sitting and dinning room, office complex. It was nice, but probably really designed for hosting hospitality parties at conferences. Every once in while I get upgraded to a multi room suite, such as the Centenial Suite at the Singapore Conrad. While those rooms are not as big at the suite in SLC, I really like the layout and amenities.

I have had some great upgrades over the past few years as a diamond:

1. Hilton Hawaian Village - one bedroom suite in Tapa tower.

2. London Park Lane - One bedroom Mayfair suite

3. Hilton Rockville - Presidential Suite

4. Hilton Salt Lake City - one bedroom suite

5. Hilton Quebec City - huge suite over looking the Plains of Abraham

6. Palmer House - pool table suite.

7. Squaw Peaks Phoenix - Casita near river ranch

Of course there have been disappointments as well but overall I've been treated fairly well as a diamond.^

Got a really wonderful suite at the Doubletree Paradise Valley in Scottsdale a few years back -- huge living/dining room with a kitchen-sized wet bar and cathedral ceilings, with long balconies overlooking one of the pools. Sad to say I was only there overnight, but I made sure I had time for room service breakfast on the balcony.

How on earth do you get free upgrades to a suite?

I am a HH Diamond but have never been upgraded to a suite. I have had upgrades to Exec Floor with lounge access.

Do you just ask at check-in: "Are there any free upgrades for suites available to HH Diamond Members?"

Does booking through the Diamond Desk make a difference? I have always use the HH website.

My next stay is at the Hilton Sydney.

thanks

How on earth do you get free upgrades to a suite? It just happens. My best upgrade was at Budapest, where we got a corner suite with four picture windows overlooking the city. Also been u/g'd to suites at Brighton, Antwerp, and one or two others.

No, no! That's far too pushy ;)

How on earth do you get free upgrades to a suite?

On the rare occasion, it just happens.

I have very happy memories of being given a huge suite at the Dresden Hilton complete with large dining room.

I had a suite several times at the Colombo Hilton. Then they said Hilton Corporate said they were being too generous, and they no longer gave me that upgrade.

I was given a suite at the Hilton Mauritius as well at the Hilton Kuching.

I've been given a suite a couple times at the Conrad Bangkok.

Earlier this month, I was given a junior suite at the Bucharest Hilton.

I've been given suites at the Waldorf London.

Mind you, these upgrades are across several years. And you'll note they are all international.

I agree with the others, most of the time, these things just happen. Nearly every time is when I'm traveling alone and just for one night; the time I'm with someone and we're hoping for an upgrade is when it probably won't happen. I received my first upgrade when I didn't even have status, but think it had something to do with who made the reservation and/or my company. Otherwise, a warm smile can usually warm up a clerk, even if they've just been frazzled by another customer complaint.

Depending how I read them, I'll say something like, "Are there any upgrades available?" Sometimes they'll say, "Let me check," sometimes, "No, I'm sorry, we're all full," and a couple of times, "You already have the best room we have."

On the rare occasion, it just happens.

I think the common denominator is that the stay is just one or two nights. A one night stay gives the best odds.

I've only been Diamond for about a week... so I'm looking forward to some suite upgrades in the future (hopefully).

As Gold, the nicest upgrade I've received was a one bedroom suite with a very nice view at the Metrotown Hilton in Vancouver, BC. It was a two night stay.

As a Diamond, a while back, I managed to get a top floor, sea view, massive two room suite at the Brighton Metropole as an upgrade, which was rather nice!
