Every year about this time I start getting apprehensive, knowing that it will be just a few more days until all my accounts roll over to Zero YTD miles, stays and nights. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

This is soooooooooo sad. Any good advice on how to deal with totally depressing annual event?

That was my solution (SIN on 10-Jan).. Can't bear to see the Zeros.. so by the time they are visable (around the 14th I guess) I'll have at least 20k back up there http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
The worst bit is knowing how much of a hard slog is ahead of you to get back to that comfortable 100k mark again.. then you get to relax for a few months...

I'm spreading out my mileage runs this year because I just KNOW business travel is going to go to hell this year.

I'll go for 4 SIN runs and pick up the other 20k in business mileage.. now is that dedicated or what..

One of the few real "enhancements" to the SkyMiles program is that really heavy FFs can carry some excess mileage over. Unfortunately, I don't fly quite enough to benefit from that! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

No, no, no! Think of what lies ahead! A completely clean slate! All the places you'll visit and the things you'll do! Another year's worth of incriminating photos of you taken by others at FT gatherings about to begin! OK, I speak only for myself on that last one.

On your mark, get set, GO!

Thank you for the excellent suggestions on how to get over it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

I am a little confused by the procedural order. Am I supposed to, as Efrem suggests:

Book a flight, preferably a long one to a warm place in mid-January.

before or after I follow vasantn's path:

I find Russian vodka helpful ... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Maybe we could have a big old party and all earn points by flying to Russia to buy the Vodka. Then we could fly someplace warm and have another party, drinking the Vodka in a Flyer Talk suite while we book our flights for the year on line. Just think of the possibilities. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

We all may end up with top status on airlines we have never even hear of heretofore.

Hm. If you're on a flight that starts on Dec. 31 and lands on Jan. 1, which year do the miles get credited to? I assume the earlier year, since the flight is booked for 12/31. It'd be cool, though, if the miles were prorated....

This was discussed on the UA boards a while back. In UA land it goes by date of departure, with time local to the departing city. I believe this rule also applies for earning HK-49s, which accumulate quarterly.

It shouldn't take an MIT grad http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif to realize this convention skirts the thorny issue of how to credit a flight such as LAX-SYD which lands two calendar days after it departs.

Depressing?? Not at all!

What's depressing is when I have met all my goals near the end of the year and have to twiddle my thumbs and wait until 1/1 rolls around so I can start the next chase! Let's go!

All of us road warriors should be recognized for traveling at all.

This was a year of inconveniences, new airport rules, bankruptcies, flight reductions, etc, etc.

Those of us who traveled every week had to be quite "flexible" I hope 2003 is smoother sailing.

Good Luck!

Yup, its a shock to the system. Must make a copy of the statement for the year and gaze at it from time to time.

I think I may have actually flown fewer miles this year than last. We had that AS/QF award last year that had us at about 17K miles that didn't count for squat mileage wise but the memories http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif.

I'm kicking off the 2003 "Mileage Chase" at 8:36 AM on Jan 1st with a quickie AA AUS-DFW flight to catch the AA's DFW-FRA flight that afternoon. By end of Jan 3rd, I should be about 38,000 to 40,000 miles richer (and about 11,100 Q-miles toward Plat requalification). So I won't have the pleasure of seeing any 0's next year. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Have fun and have a great Happy New Year to everyone

The zero miles may inspire me. This year I waited until around September to figure out I needed 60,000 miles on UA to hit 1K and a lot of segments on US to hit CP. It was a busy November and December. I plan on spreading it out next year.

Actually it's over 41K miles. On my trip, AUS-DFW-FRA-LGW-DFW-AUS I should earn the following miles:

Base miles: 11,410
Plat bonus: 11,410
Business class bonus (out of 10340 miles in business class): 2,585
EURY4: 15,000
Online booking bonus: 1,000

Final total: 41,405 miles for $855 ($0.0206 per mile).

That's one thing I like about AA's system of scheduling "miles toward e-upgrades" counter to run until the end of February.

When the YTD qualifying miles reset to zero, at least I'll have the miles-toward-upgrades counter to re-assure me that I'm still a traveler.

Hahahahaha!

I started the year not with zero but with 2,000 miles from an expired set of 500-milers! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

On second thought, that's NOT such a good thing -- it means my upgrade requests never go through! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

And in any case, it does say: "Year-to-date Premier qualifying miles 0"

No matter. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
