Hilton HHonors - Question about converting another Amex card into HHonors Amex

Sorry if this has been answered before (I tried the search to no avail). I was wondering if anyone has tried converting an existing Amex card (Blue in my case) into HHonors Amex. If yes, did you get any bonuses? I already have enough cards as it is and I'm not using the Amex that I have that much but would be willing to switch the spending patterns if I can convert it.

Mods: if you feel this post is better suited to another forum please move it.

I think the best thing to do would be for you to call AM EX and ask directly

I will do that but wanted to arm myself with FT knowledge before talking to CS - it always helps if you know more than they do ;).

I'm pretty sure if they do switch you over you will not get the bonuses as if you applied for a new card then cancelled your older one after.

I don't know if you know or not but once you apply for and obtain the HH Amex (and bonus pts) you can then consolidate your credit limit towards one card and even cancel the other card.

I had a Student Amex that I got in '96.
I applied for and obtained a HH Amex in '02 or '03 I believe.
Through my online account summary I can view both cards. I was able to transfer the majority of my credit limit from my existing Amex to the HH Amex. I am pretty sure I can still do that... I just checked but do not see the option now... although you could probably do it through a phone call as well.
I only have a limit of $1000 on my pre-existing Amex now.

You may even be able to cancel your old card... my HH Amex has, "Member since 96" on it even though I first got it in '02 / '03.

As I only have 3 credit cards and the Amex cards are two of them, I am not worried about the too many cards issue.

I do not think you would get a bonus for migrating the card into a HH Amex.
Is there a negative to applying for the HH Amex and then canceling the old Amex?

Yes you can still allocate your total credit as you wish over different Amex cards all you have to do is call in.

But with the current HH promo being 50k points why would anyone want to change a card over? Just apply for new one and then cancel the one you dont want.

This varies. Some people report success getting the bonus, some don't. I got a bonus converting Amex DL->Amex HH. In fact, the best bonus available at the time (10k + 2.5k for first 4 stays). I didn't ask for it and wasn't expecting it. Some others here have reported not getting it.

As for converting, a few years ago Amex would only allow you to convert within categories (so DL->HH was OK, Blue->HH was not). I don't know if they've changed this policy or not.

It worked well for me. I converted my old AmEx (Blue) to AmEx (HH). I received all of the bonuses at that time. The AmEx Blue had to finish out the monthly billing cycle, but that was about it.

I did it over the phone and made sure that the bonuses, etc, would post. I asked the CSR if I could convert back to the Blue down the road, and she said yes. There are a few cards that don't convert back, but most do. Good luck!
