Lst Saturday flew TPA-ORD-CMI, had to show ID at TPA and ORD at the boarding gate. Monday flew CMI-STL-TPA, and it was announced at STL that ID is no longer necessary at the boarding gate. What's up with that? Why can't TSA make one rule apply to all airports? Why all the confusion? Any thoughts?

You must be a novice at dealing with US Government entities.
Seriously, I think they're sloooowly moving in that direction at all airports, but it's a gradual phasing in thing that's going on now.
Last week in IAH, I had to show my ID 3 times within 20 feet while going thru security, then not at the gate. Then in BNA, no ID at security, but yes at the gate.

Not sure where I'm going, but I'm getting there fast.

They will, but it takes time to roll it out to all the airports. They currently have a list of where they are checking at the security checkpoint over at
http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=87&content=372
Once they have this security checking in place everywhere, you will not have to show an ID at the gate anymore.

Within the last 5 days, no ID-check or gate-rape at: CLE, STL, DTW.
