bmi diamond club - Flying EBABYSS, upgrade possible?

Hi
I am flying business from LHR to HKG with SWISS and I had to book my connecting flight from EDI to LHR separately with BMI. The problem is I know I will be over the limit with the tight baggage limit when flying economy with BMI.
I am thinking rather than paying extra 70 pounds for the excess baggage, an upgrade may be a better idea.
Is it possible to upgrade my BMI flight ( LHR - EDI ) from EBABYSS to Business?
Can I do it at the airport on the day I am flying?
How much is it I have to pay for the single upgrade? (I paid 60 pounds for the return BMI flight)
Any better ideas? I am in such a dilemma. Please help me out here. Thank you!

The change fee for tiny fares is £80 per sector + fare difference. AFAIK, this also applies to upgrading which would make it plainly not worth it (might as well book a new ticket). Even if the change fee did not apply, the fare difference will be approx £150 if you get a D class fare, £180 for a C class fare. All in all, I don't think that the upgrade route is the best one to deal with excess baggage in your circumstances. What I would consider if I were in your place:
1) See whether you can place more heavy items in your carry on and lighter ones in your checked baggage, as there is no weight restriction on carry-on as long as you can lift it unaided in the overhead locker.
2) Consider whether it would be possible and worth throwing away the BD ticket and fly BA instead, with their new policy of fixed fee of £30 (£21 if paid online) per excess bag (rather than weight-based) in addition to the one bag-23kg max allowance (rather than 20kg on BD).

If you're an M&M member have you got enough miles to score a J redemption ticket to LHR?

I only need to upgrade my trip from LHR - EDI. I have 14000 miles at the moment. I don't think I can use the M&M miles to upgrade this BD flight?!

NickB many thanks for the input. I think I will consider option 1. Pay 200 quids on the single upgrade doesn't sound any good to me.

NickB has the right answers. In my experience bmi is sympathetic about carry-on baggage. If you're on a tight connection, it is possible to check your bag in the Gate 8 area - the part of LHR from where the bmi domestic flights depart. What time of day is your flight?

Thanks ajamieson. My flight from LHR - EDI is at 10:55 (BD54). I am hoping I could put a few pounds into my carryon luggage. I'm glad to know that bmi is sympathetic about this. I don't think BA is in comparison.

I don't think BA is in comparison.Neither BD nor BA impose a weight limit on hand luggage any longer (other than requiring you to be able to lift the luggage yourself in the overhead lockers). Your limitation with both airlines will not be the weight but the Department of Transport size limitation of 56x45x25 (cms), which is enforced by airport staff (i.e. BAA at EDI and LHR) rather than the airlines themselves. BAA staff can be real sticklers on this, so do make sure that your hand luggage does not exceed the limits, even by a fraction of a centimeter.

My rollaboard is slightly bigger than that but I've not had problems - I've obviously been very lucky. I suppose the OP's problems, if any, would occur at the Flight Connection Centre when he/she reclears security. Given that they couldn't enforce the size restriction without sending passengers back landside to check-in, I think the chances are pretty good. What do you think?

I completely agree. This should be no problem for me then. Thanks both NickB and ajamieson.
