Mahalo! slippahs Nov 1, 07, 1:51 pm I hope Slippahs will give me his advice on this...which wing is preferable-Kamehameha or Ka'ahumanu-view, pool, parking wise? Mahalo! Unfortunately, when we last stayed there, it was during the renovation so only one wing was open. That was the Kamehameha Wing. Parking is closest to the Kamehameha wing and the views are spectacular from it as well. The pools are right in the middle of both wings. It's a pretty small property to begin with, so walking distance wise, I don't think you'll have a problem with either one. Can't comment on the view from the Ka'ahumanu wing. cmjaffe Nov 3, 07, 7:27 am Slippahs, How would you "rate" Marriott compared to HWV? Know you were there during renovations and probably the grounds aren't "as impressing" as HWV. Got a fair amount of points for each program. Since I know the kids would want to go back to Hapuna Beach and also explore island more (probably do stargazing one night) I'm wondering if Marriott would be a better choice since it's such a "chore" getting around Hilton ... especially if they're not running all of the transportation options (boats weren't working and limited rail service in December before Xmas). Thanks for your suggestions. Carolyn flyerwife Nov 3, 07, 12:40 pm Slippahs, How would you "rate" Marriott compared to HWV?... I'm not slippahs, but I did spend time this past Feb at both resorts with my 3 teenagers. It was a return trip as we've been to both the Marriott and HWV before. We also had points for both so we split our trip into 4 nights first at the Marriott and then 6 nights at the Hilton. The Marriott was under renovation at the time but the new salt water infinity pool was completed and the construction in the parking lot and conference center were not an issue for us. The Marriott is definitely less crowded, less busy, less fancy, less resort-like, smaller....but that's not to say that any of these are a negative. The beach is better (since there is little to no beach at the HWV with the exception of the lagoon beach or a very rocky beach). We found the Marriott to be beautiful and relaxing. There is really only one restaurant at the Marriott but the food is good (decent selections for kids as well) and if you want variety you can go across the street to the Kings Shops or to any of the other area hotels (Waikoloa is REALLY building up...lots has changed just in the 3 years since our previous trip). The HWV is a busy place, outrageously high food and drink prices, sprawling does not even begin to describe the grounds. Many more, varied restaurants, great pool areas, beautiful gardens and amazing water views. You'll get your exercise walking around this place. Since you have points for both, you might want to try both. We loved it. Not such a big deal packing and moving next door (we had a car; you'll probably want one too). I would suggest, however, that if you do decide to stay at both, that you stay at the Marriott first. I don't know how old your children are but it might be a bit of a letdown for them to go from the hustle and bustle of activity at the HWV to the relative serenity of the Marriott. And to the OP, we stayed in the Kamehameha wing as well. I think it may be a tiny bit closer to the pools but a bit further from the beach. Not much noticeable difference to me really. Hope you all have a great time! cmjaffe Nov 5, 07, 10:31 am flyerwife, We stayed at HWV for 4 nights this past December. We had a ressie on hold at Marriott also at this time but cancelled and used Hilton points since we didn't know how much construction would be going on then (right before Xmas). The boats weren't running at HWV and limited tram service so, yes, we DID get our exercise getting around. The kids will be 15 and 12 and we don't intend to do dolphin quest. The kids can't wait to get back to Hapuna beach or going further south past Kona to snorkle etc. Just need to figure out which islands to go to for this summer. We're headed back to Kauai for a week in December and then 5 days in HNL before heading back to cold CT. Haven't been to Maui though. Thanks, Carolyn |
