Best buddy wants to hire a 4x4 and spend a day in the desert - can anyone recommend anywhere unusual to go for a couple of ageing City Slickers !

Not quite the desert, but check out Red Rock Canyon, and drive around lake Mead.

Pahrump.

bless you.

I really need to get out there, just to be able to say I have been to Pahrump.

Lots of places to go - check out my website.
Try Mt. Charleston, or Death Valley, or Red Rock or even drive up to Mesquite or a little further up to St. George...a longer drive would be to Grand Canyon, but you can easily get to Hoover Dam or Laughlin...pretty much any direction 5 miles out of Las Vegas will "get you to the desert", but trust me on this, the desert gets pretty boring, pretty quickly, so choose a destination at the END of the desert.

Your best bet would be an overnight tour to Sedona...I think that is "the desert" you whacky East Coast people are looking for.

Rent a Glock - and take a class at Front Sight.

Front sight is 1/2 way to Pahrump you could kill two birds with one stone.

Thanks for the link, there are some really nice courses, though price is kind of steep such as the one day course for a purple chip.

Yes, excellent professional training. You get more than you pay for at this place.

Take a look at this page:

The offer does not cover the one day course. But, you can take a two day for $150.00 each if you take a friend. The offer was made to anyone that signed up for the newsletters. Most of them are linked from the page above and are very good.

Pahrump.

Pahrump it is then.
There's a vineyard there and a nice looking restaurant for lunch.... which could well be a two-bottler if best buddy agrees to do all the driving.
One final question - does anyone know the cheapest place to hire a vehicle for the day and ( depending on our luck at the tables ) can we hire something a little unusual with no expense spared.
Many thanks.

I'd pickup/return on the Strip to avoid 25% airport fees/taxes. Call Dollar RAC and see what's available for your date.

Thanks again. Now this is very intriguing. While the automatic weapons are sexy but impractical, the shotgun course is what interests me most. Should probably do this during winter when it is less hot since this is "out of vegas" ;).

On a side note you may not be familiar with Nye County Nevada and some of the local establishments in Pahrump.

But we're two middle-aged and wealthy men given a 7-day pass by our loving wives.
Surely you don't think ... no you can't be serious ...is everyone this cynical !

One fun little 4X4 drive is Christmas Tree Pass road, a "short cut" on the way to Laughlin. You'll see some interesting geologic formations and pass by Spirit Mountain, a sacred Native American area. If you visit Valley of Fire, I recommend using scenic North Shore Drive, through Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Beaver Las Vegas ?

Me and the best buddy scoped the site but to be honest some of the bints look older than we are !
Maybe we're getting on a bit but we've both decided a nice spot of lunch and a leisurely stroll around Pahrump would be sufficient exercise.

I think you'll find it to be a letdown. Others in this forum have suggested Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, etc. which in my view are all spectacular compared to Pahrump which is not. I'll add one more suggestion: Valley of Fire State Park, which has utterly magnificent natural beauty. See http://parks.nv.gov/vf.htm for more information.

I'll second VoF and add another no vote for Pahrump. Death Valley might be another option.

The Shotgun class is great! And, is also probably the best defensive weapon of choice.

If you do decide to stay in Pahrump and take this class, there is a Best Western that has a very reasonably priced suite with a full kitchen and queen murphy bed in the living room to give you and your friend a bit more space.
