Starwood Preferred Guest - Unexpected (early) Platinum and status at checkin vs/ booking

Apologies if there's already a thread about this (but I did search extensively and scan deeply! hehe) but I logged in to my SPG account online about an hour ago and noticed that it had me as Platinum. This was a bit unexpected, because I still had a couple more stays to go until Platinum, and hadn't hit the mark with nights either.

Has anyone had this happen? Is it just a glitch and will by be knocked back down to Gold by days end? hehe. I do have upcoming stays reserved but have read numerous times here that those don't count until actually completed. Most all my stays have been pretty expensive ones (at high category Starwood properties with fairly substantial bills at stay's end) but I've also read in many places that all has no bearing on any kind of early jump to elite.

I'm simply curious as to what could be behind this and if anyone else has any experience with it.

Secondly, I read in several places how people suggest notifying SPG or any upcoming hotels of new status if you move up between booking and checkin (such as if you're Gold when making the reservation, yet make Platinum by the time that stay comes around).

For those of you who've not called ahead for something like that, did you get Platinum treatment upon arrival anyways? Or did you find the hotel to be unaware of your Platinum status vs. Gold?

I don't really care about my next 2 stays as... well... I wasn't expecting to be Platinum by their time anyways hehe. But I have some stays in December (and certainly would have been Plat by then anyways) that have already been reserved in Europe and I almost feel like a pest for calling to point out Platinum but I suppose will go ahead and do it if it really makes a difference.

When I bumped up to Platinum it didn't register for the bookings I had already made, they had to look it up again when I got to the hotel to give me the points and they hadn't pre-assigned a room.

I would call the reservation number and just have the bookings reconfirmed that should apply the platinum status at the hotel.

Not sure about the early platinum status.

Thanks for the input! I'll be sure to give them a ring. I decided to go ahead and e-mail but have yet to hear back so perhaps a phone call will do the trick. ^

FYI went ahead and called SPG to request the reservations be refreshed, and the customer service rep was more than happy to oblige, mentioning that it's an extremely good idea to do so.

She pointed out that she wishes she got more calls for such requests and they're a great idea, as she instead gets far too many Platinum members calling from the hotels at check-in complaining that the property was unaware of their status because they were Gold at booking time. She pointed out as well that she wishes SPG's computer system would automatically notify the hotel if any existing reservation belonged to someone who moved up in status as that would solve it all! Very helpful lady.
