I know that in general you cannot select a seat to reserve on an Air New Zealand flight, you can only request a preferred seat and they will try to accomodate you. However, in playing with Air New Zealands other worldwide sites, I was able to actually bring up the reserved seatmap and see what seats are open. For some reason though, I cannot duplicate this again. Does anyone know how to bring this up?

That is because so if the airnz sites still use the old booking system therefore it gives you seat selection. If you use the muilty sector one on the new zealand it gives you the seat selection but its not always at the cheapest price.
I used this for a recent book (was booking a refundable ticket for Christmas, a an option).
I booked some seat on the bulk head, these were thrown out in the system due to the bassinet. But other than that it was fine, the confirmation email that came 1 day before my eticket had the words: Seats Requested: xxG.

Go through to the final stage here (https://www.itn.net/cgi/get?jet/tools/air/multi_city:stamp=*itn/ord=NEWREC,itn/air/nzairnz01), and you'll get to the seatmap to view.

Thanks ntddevsys,
That's exactly what I was looking for. I called in my "preferred" seat, but just wanted to get an idea of what other seats are still open.
