I just picked up a TravelPro Wall Street VIP Expandable Deluxe Rolling Computer Brief (that name is a mouth-full). I got it for a steal at Crew Outfitters, the pilot & FA store near Hartsfield-Jackson. It was $45 refurbished w/ full warranty (retail $340, street price around $150). It's replacing a cheap-but-functional American Tourister Mobile Office Deluxe. It is primarily for 2-3 day business trips with clothes, laptop, and gadgets in one carry-on bag.

The American Tourister Mobile Office Deluxe is a roll-aboard suitcase with side-access for laptop and front pockets for gadgets and files. It looks like a rolling suitcase. It measures 19" x 11" x 15" and is always required to be gate-checked on RJs.

The Wall Street VIP is a rolling laptop/shoulder-bag that has a back compartment that opens up 180 degrees for clothes (also expands). It measures 18" x 13" x 9" in standard configuration and the depth expands about 2" extra when necessary.

The sizes are very close. The biggest difference is one is configured as a roll-aboard suitcase and one is configured as a rolling briefcase (vertical vs. horizontal). Would the configuration of the Wall Street VIP make it more likely to make it on-board an RJ as a carry-on as opposed to being pink-tagged for gate-check? I can carry it on-board as a shoulder-bag if that would make it more likely to get on-board as well.
