Travel Technology - Sprint Moto Q - Anybody else have problems with this phone?

I recently re-upped with Sprint. I've been with them since launch and am grandfathered into a great three-line plan that no one else will match, so I'm pretty much stuck with them, even though their handset lineup is by far the worst on the market.

However, I settled on one device that I liked - the Moto Q. They've reached the point where the Q is free with my corp discount, which is an added bonus - I didn't like the idea of paying a couple hundred bucks a pop for three new phones. (I assume this one is free because they will eventually roll out one of the newer Q's that Verizon already has.)

Anyway, all of the first Q's that were shipped to me 4 weeks ago have long since croaked. Different problems, but all had to be swapped out for new phones. I've since talked to a couple of other folks who love the sleek little Moto Q, but theirs crapped out and they've since moved on to a different model.

So I'm wondering...is this thing a total lemon? Anybody else here use a Moto Q with Sprint? Or have the older version with Verizon, which probably has the same "guts" inside...

I now have all of my Q's working - but I'm just holding my breath for the next one to crap out.

Not just a lemon - a grove of lemons. My Q has a set of problems, and I've given up trying to do anything about it because discussing the issue with Sprint just resulted in shrugged shoulders.

Here is a list of my issues -

1) radio turns off on its own for no reason - you need to reboot the phone and then the message 'the radio is off, would you like to turn it on' comes up - clicking OK turns the phone back on

2) bluetooth connections and disconnections set up the phone for freezing the next time you make or receive a call

3) there is no way to lock the keys, so if the phone sits in my pocket, I often find the screen black and the phone frozen when I pull it out (for some unknown reason), which requires removing the battery to reset it

4) quite often, the phone simply doesn't ring - people call and call, and they hear it ringing, but the phone sits there. Ditto for SMS. Reboot the phone and it works again - usually. After reboots, the flood of undelivered text messages hits

Four significant and major issues - which essentially render the phone unusable for me. I decided I no longer wanted to be chained to a phone controlled by the carrier or suffer the risks coming from the carrier layering Lord-knows-what on top of the OS. With that in mind, I bought a Dopod C730 from a fellow FTer, which I'm testing out on ATT prepaid - and if all is well, I will sign up with ATT and port away from Sprint.

I may find that living in the unlocked GSM world is too much fun to go back to the world of proprietary locked CDMA phones. I see quite a few Moto Q's on Ebay and Craiglist for $200+, and I expect to sell mine shortly.

I'm guessing I won't be getting any offers from FTers after this post :D

I got one recently have and have had no problems so far. And it does have a key lock.

Sprint is releasing a new version (similar to Verizon's new one) later this year, if you can hold out.

I had a Sprint Q for all of two days before exchanging it for a Treo 755p. IMHO, the Q is garbage. It had a difficult user interface, froze regularly, and with a little bit of Internet use, didn't even last a day on a single charge.

Buried in the menus somewhere there is indeed a way to lock the keys, but this shouldn't be an issue because you shouldn't have this phone in the first place if you can possibly help it. Corporate discounts are well and good - but if the phone doesn't work, as was my experience, what is the point?

That's definitely the case for me. However, with these phone swaps I now have some extra chargers. :D Seriously - when I went to exchange the phone, the Sprint guy let me keep the accessories from the broken phone - he specifically said "You'll want the extra chargers for the Q!" Now my wife and I have one each at home & office.

But he also said that most of the smartphones drain the battery faster than advertised. And I like the feel of the slim Q - not sure if I want to buy the extended battery which juts out of the back of the phone. I guess as long as the battery holds charge for 1 full day with me using it often to email, use the Internet, etc., I can live with it.
