Air New Zealand Air Points - A very basic question re earning airbucks...

I really should know the answer to this question - I guess it betrays how very few flights I ever credit to airpoints these days (the vast majority of mine I earn through my credit card).
Anyway, now that I have just managed to sneak back to *G status courtesy of Air Canada, I was toying with the idea of crediting some of my remaining AirNZ travel this year to Airpoints, just to build up my fund of points for upgrades. What I have never quite understood however is the "journey" concept - am I right in thinking that a trans-Tasman flight of WLG-SYD would earn the same airbucks as WLG-AKL-SYD? ie they have the same start and end points so qualify as the same journey? Or do I actually get credit for the WLG-AKL sector as well?
No Mad Atta, NZ connections are the only exception to that rule: you get your Trans-Tasman points plus something like 7 or 10 Air$ for the connecting flight - so long as it's not a "Smart"Saver.

Sorry to hijack thread but I have a somewhat similar query. I am been *G for AC for years but based in SYD. I am keeping my flying points with AC as it suits my needs just now.
I do however have a stack of Westpac Altitude points and cannot really find a Airpoints points chart. I have been on the NZ web site and I cannot find a clear idea of what an award with cost. I am trying to figure out what a every hundred thousand altitude points would translate to in airpoints?
I really on use points for long haul J/F. If airpoints are aligned with Qantas points (what a rip off QF is!!) then I will not join the NZ program and put the Altitude points into my MH account. I have been on the MH site and it shows me what I need to get where and for some reason am finding the same info for NZ airpoint (such as SYD-Europe J/F). I found MH to roughly be what I would spend for a Star award with AC.
Thanks if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Cheers

The conversion is at
http://altituderewards.com.au/public/redeem_ff_calculator.aspx
480 Altitude points = 3 Air NZ Airpoints
Must convert in multiples of 480.

Thank you Buzz53, very helpful and was not aware of that feature on the altitude site (have it book marked!)
I guess the other part of my question is where do I see what is need to fly say Syd-LHR etc in J? I googled airpoints reward chart but cant see this info I would have over 3500 airpoints , seems little but I am used to paying AC rates ie star J SYD-LHR 145,000 or F 175,000 points -AC points that is.
Is there anywhere I can see what number of airpoints would get me to various regions such as South Pacific, NortH America, Europe??
Thanks again

In general you spend an Airbuck like it was a dollar, so any airfare NZ quotes you (on NZ metal) you can pay for with an Airbuck.
There is a table for Star Alliance (http://airnz.com.au/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/flight_rewards/star_reward_redemption.htm) award flights, and a table for elite discount awards (http://airnz.com.au/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/flight_rewards/discounted_business_award.htm). Note that you must be an NZ elite to get access to the discount awards.

ajnz, thanks so much that is exactly what I was after. Really helpful!
I park my Star flying miles in AC but have a fair few Altitude miles and know QF is a rip off so now looking at MH or NZ to best spend my credit card points for long haul J/F.
Looks like MH may offer best value for money but will have to more research this.
I love NZ but may end up using them off my AC points-love getting to the Islands in the winter!!
Thanks again and apologies for taking over this thread, I appreciate the help of members in the know.

Bear in mind the discounted Elite / Koru club Business Class awards: even if you're not Elite you can fly Business Premier to London for 4140 Australian Airpoint Dollars which is a brilliant fare - but if you're not NZ Elite you can only access this by joining Koru Club.
Alternatively, if one pax buys a fare, the companion can fly free for 70% of that 4140 Airpoints, which equates to a Business Class return to London for 3000 Airpoints dollars - fewer than a Premium Economy seat!

Just in case you didn't know SYD/YYZ,
you can easily transfer your Westpac Altitude points into NZ Airpoints dollars via Westpac internet banking (on the right hand side after you log in), quick, painless and just takes a couple of days to be transferred.
Now to find more things to buy to get more points..... :D

One thing to note is that one elite's points cannot buy another elite a discounted ticket, unless it is a companion ticket.

That's not quite right. You can gift rewards for those living at the same address, or in the case of Gold Elite members to any nominated gift recipient (limit 4? changeable once per year).

Are we sure about this? Earlier this year, I booked two discounted business seats AKL/LAX, one for me, one for Mr debh, both from my AP account. He is my Gold Elite Partner so perhaps that made a difference?

I have in writing from Air New Zealand that, that very thing is not possible; they cite rule 3.2.1.3
Subject to strictly limited availability and for their own travel only, Gold Elite, Gold, Silver and Koru Club members may purchase Discounted long-haul Business redemption fares.
Very Very  at NZ now.
