I am booking two nights in New York and will be meeting my wife there. She is arriving ahead of me; do I have to be with her to get my plat perks or will they have to wait for me to get there before giving us the perks? By then of course, unless we want to switch rooms, it will be to late to take advantage of the potential of upgrading.

I've done this several times without a problem. Only time it was questioned my SO just said "He'll be meeting me here later" and that was it really... perks were received at check in, points, upgrades etc without a hitch.

I don't know if it made any difference or not but I gave her my MR plat card to hand over at check in which she handed over with a printout of the reservation and credit card... you might want to do this also as a little extra reassurance but sure it made no real difference.

I've done this sort of thing many times. It's helpful if the person checking in has the credit card used to make the reservation.

It helps if you list both people on the reservation too and give the hotel a heads up that one person will be checking in early.

I sometimes have a co-worker check in before I arrive. In these cases I call ahead and get the hotel's credit card authorization form, which I complete and fax back. This allows me to put all of the rooms on my card from the start, even when I'm not available at check-in.

Ive discovered the hard way that Marriott cares about the order of names on the room...if its my number, my name needs to go first, even if I add a spouse or coworker...

I've also done this many times myself, and my experience has been they're just as happy to swipe my wife's credit card as to take the info from mine.

Good point, however, about having your own name first on the res....spouse/significant other/associate, etc. second.

Usually, if Mrs. Cyberdad is arriving before me, I'll call or fax the hotel with all the relevant info. Never have had a problem. Same goes for when one of my adult children is sharing the room and arrives first.

Always add the other guest's name when doing this. Marriott Oakland would not give my wife plat perks even though she had my plat card and credit card with her. We were supposed to arrive together and at the last minute couldn't which is why her name wasn't also on the original reservation. I didn't think it was necessary to call and add her name but apparently it is at this property!

Can names be added online to an award reservation? or must I call for this?
