I think DXB-ZRH is also operated by 345 ...
Any idea why ? I always thought it was a bit strange as ZRH is less far than LHR or LGW from DXB ...

AFAIK, two reasons:
1) A company in ZRH buys up a certain # of A340-500 seats ex ZRH for each flight
2) LHR has too much demand to waste of a precious slot on a small A340-500. IIRC all LHR flights are now operated by a 777-200 or 777-300 (EK7/8 just switched to a 77W from 332.)
