when yu arrive internationally, evenif you aren't connectig elsewhere, you have to recheck your bag?

Once you clear customs, you have to go through the passenger terminals to leave the airport, and there are things that are allowed in your checked luggage that aren't allowed past the passenger checkpoints. To quote from another source from the internets (http://www.airlinequality.com/Airports/Airport_forum/atl.htm):

Once you go through customs and immigrations, your bags are re-checked below deck and can take an hour or more to arrive at the carousel from concourse E.

All true, and I'm sure the hour wait has happened before, but on a recent trip back to ATL from CUN, our post-customs bags were at the main terminal by carousel by the time we got there. Transit time was about 15 minutes.

I connected internationally through ATL and had to overnight there (scheduled) so my group had to claim our luggage at baggage claim. Between Customs/Immigration and baggage claim one girl in my group's bag apparently fell off the belt and was shredded.

We had to wait for 2 hours to figure out how her bag disappeared in the 6000 feet. DL gave her a brand new top quality bag on the spot.
