hi all,
as the title says, i received a letter offering me an upgrade to #1 club gold for free. my main question is, if i accept for how long will this membership be? obviously it seems like a no brainer to accept, just curious if it will be 1 year from when i accept or if there is a standard period (calendar year or the like). i read through all the T&Cs without any luck....
thanks

In theory, it is an annual membership, with a renewal fee of $50 (fee amount may have changed). That said, there have been several threads here where the consensus is that no one has ever been charged or heard of anyone being charged for renewal.

It's supposed to be a year but I've been with them over a year now (and love it) and never seen a bill or been charged.

Their website says:

The annual membership is only $60 and minimum age for enrollment in Hertz #1 Club Gold is 25 (exceptions apply).

If you do have to pay, the AAA gets you the membership for half price, which is how I started.

I have yet to receive a bill in the mail or anything for the membership fee for Hertz #1 Gold and I am a CAA member.

Got it free (thanks to FT :)) and it has remained free for me for two additional years since. Maybe, just maybe, it's not free if you utterly stop renting. But even that is not confirmed. Haven't heard of anyone being charged a renewal.

I've been a member since 1991 and have never paid any yearly fee. I have probably used Hertz about 10 times since joining. I didn't know some people were getting charged for this...interesting.

My card doesn't list any expiration date either. I figured I'd have to pay next year I was comped this year. That's great news!

For example, we have assumed that we keep our Hertz Gold #1 status b/c we are AA Plat, which was how we were originally enrolled.

I was picking up a car for the weekend at an HLE this morning and she mentioned once she called up my reservation my gold number wasn't on it (Hertz always scares me wtih the info on their screens).

She looked at the paper and said, wait it is, but not here. It started a brief discussion about gold, with me saying it's probably one of the best travel deals I've ever made, her saying especially at airports, me it's the best $25 spent, her adding "and if you rent some number of times in a year, you are not charged to renew it"

Guess that answers that question on why we don't see a renewal for it.

I've gone through two periods of two to three years with no Hertz rentals, and never been charged, and the Gold account is still active when I go to use it.

There have been other similar threads over the years, and of the ones I have seen, nobody has ever claimed to have been charged a renewal fee.
