Flew AS out to ORD last week (trip report in AS forum), flew UA back from MKE. Arrived at MKE and went to the ticket counter since I didn't have a printer where I was for OLCI. The person that was there was very pleasant. He could not have been nicer. However; there was a woman who was working at the ticketing counter who was as nasty as could be. There was a woman outside who needed a wheelchair. When the baggage guy came inside explaining that there was a woman who needed a wheelchair the woman at the ticketing counter said "No she doesn't. See - she's walking now!" The woman in question was probably around 70+ years old and had a cane. I'm not sure what made Ms. Ticketing person the expert on who requires a wheelchair or not but she sure made things unpleasant for the woman who asked for one.
I then asked the ticketing guy who was helping me if they needed any volunteers. Was told they were fine from MKE but the ORD-SEA was oversold. He put me on the list. Flight from MKE ran late - took 45 minutes to fly (last time I'm flying this route - from now on it's the bus or driving - not worth the time/effort based on the distance).
Arrived ORD late (7:12 PM). Arrived in concourse F my flight to SEA was leaving from concourse C. Ran like crazy (was boarding at 7:15 for a 7:45 departure). Arrived at the C concourse shuttle bus line. Was told by the UA employee that the first 18 would be getting on the shuttle. Counted off and found out that I was number 12. Waited until the employee then said "Oh, it will be another 10 minutes at least before the shuttle comes). Took off for the gate again! I swear, I got all of my aerobic exercise in! :) Arrived at the gate. Asked the agent if she was using any volunteers. Was told No but thank you (I always think it's nice when they say thank you - it's just nice to know they appreciated me offering). Then I asked if my upgrade had come through. She said No. I was fine - had an exit row. Proceeded onto the plane (all beet red from my running through ORD! :)). Found my seat. Got settled. We are near departure and the person in front of me is told by another guy "here, I'm giving you this seat so you can have a treat and I'll sit in your seat." He then moved to F class. The same thing happened with another person. I thought this was strange but didn't say anything.
Was sitting in the exit row as mentioned, FAs never came by to either row (it was a 757) and ask us for a "verbal yes." The purser seemed to be very good as he made announcements throughout the flight that were thoughtful and informative. Because he couldn't find the short story reel he even played a "double feature" on the movies and allowed it to run as long as possible even though people wouldn't be able to see the ending due to us being early. He seemed very pleasant, friendly, and exceptionally customer oriented.
The Captain was excellent imo. We had horrible weather about 90 minutes into the flight and not only did he mention it at the beginning, but when he put on the seat belt sign he explained what was going on. It occurred again and again, he was informative and polite. He even mentioned about trying to get the Bears game on the Channel 9 and why it wasn't happening. I was impressed with this Captain.
The FAs in Y were fine. Nothing special. Came through the cabin with the beverage service once. Came through with water on a separate occasion (once). Collected trash. Again, absolutely nothing special about them. Flight landed 30 minutes early which was nice. The purser (I think his name was Tim) and the captain were at the door saying thank you to the passengers (nice touch).
